In order to begin answering such a broad and extensive question, we must first understand what the question actually means. Does the question mean to simply ask what branch of law I would like to enter upon graduating from University? Or at a deeper level does it ask me ww hat morals, values and principles I intend to demonstrate during my career as a lawyer, if I indeed choose to enter the legal world. I will be answering all spectrums of this question. In order to do so, I will draw on my experience of visiting Court, quotations from legal academics and the role that lawyers have historically played in society.

This is shown particularly well in the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird, which is widely regarded by many to be a ‘high point in the depiction of lawyers.’ In the movie, the protagonist defended an African-American male who had b been accused of raping a white female in the Southern United States at a time when Jim Crow laws greatly oppressed African-Americans. However, the trial takes place in a court with a jury composed entirely of white males, ensuring the loss of the defence’s case. Despite the failure of the protagonist’s case, the movie depicts an image of a paragon lawyer who is able and willing to fight against the oppressive laws of his own society in order to defend an individual who has had their human rights diminished. Furthermore, it depicts the ability of lawyers to ‘be a shield for the weak and powerless in society; not just a club for the powerful.’
Acting as a shield for vulnerable individuals in society would certainly be a worthwhile way for me to make use of skills that I will gain by studying law. However, despite the negative portrayal of corporate lawyers in society and the media, corporate law also represents a valuable way for me to use any skills gained. I am therefore still undecided on which branch of law I would like to
