Language is a persuasive tool but can also be misleading and confusing. Barriers such as distorting euphemisms, acronyms, lingo, illogicalities, and clichés can distort the meaning of words or phrases (Kirby et al, 1999, pg. 92). The most powerful ability of language is to understand and effectively communicate. Being able to clearly communicate ideas to each other allows empowerment and the ability to be open to new thoughts and opinions. The ability to reproduce this information to another in a certain manner can lead to persuasion. The power of persuasion allows individuals to influence and control people (Dictionary.com, 2005). This tactic of persuasion can also be referred to as propaganda, which increases power by spreading information for the purpose of promoting some cause (Dictionary.com, 2005). The propagandist informs, usually through public speaking or mass media, hoping to persuade the audience to embrace their point of view. With the support of the audience, the speaker gains power.
Through language, leaders are able to determine how the audience perceives a situation, what they are willing to accept, and persuade how they feel. These individuals had a well thought-out plan to persuade people in order to gain power. Certain people are able to verbalize internal feelings and gain the trust of people. Propaganda as an art of persuasion has been used for thousands of years. The Nazi government of Germany, more specifically Adolf Hitler, used the ability to influe...
...an is capable of persuading his audience into accepting his simplistic views of the world. He makes it easier to rationalize with his stance by his strategic use of sentence structure and word choice. When analyzing a past speech or interpreting a speech as it is given, upmost priority should be given to analytical tools for analyzing persuasive symbols and language. Whether the topic at hand is motivated by great emotions as it is here or not, the audience can easily be swayed in one direction surprisingly based only on universal comprehension.
To persuade one is a challenge in itself, but to sway the minds of everyone is something unfathomable. The infection of ideals was one of many tools used during World War II. The methods differ for propaganda but they share the same purpose, to saturate your view with anomalous thoughts. By reading In the Garden of Beasts, we can deduce that propaganda played a huge role during World War II. It prolonged the United States intervention of the war and allowed Hitler to prolong his exposure of his master plan, genocide of millions. “The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses.” (Hitler, p. Chapter 5). Propaganda does more than just affect the minds of its own people; it alters the perception of the world.
In the book, Propaganda, author Edward L Bernays, who is nephew of Sigmund Freud, transcends the public relation industry. This short, 13-part instructional manual delves deep into the intricacies and usage of propaganda. Bernays claims that the public is in a constant state of manipulation. He argues that in order for a society to be highly functioning and stable, public opinion must be manipulated and swayed. While I find his claims disturbing, it was refreshing to read something so blunt. Bernays’ use of psychological techniques to work the mechanics of public opinion truly classifies him as the “father of public relations.”
It’s impossible to decipher how other people view your image. It’s a hypothesis, an educated guess. Projected images can sometimes be misunderstood, viewed as negative, self-serving transparencies. In my experience a large segment of the population attempts to portray a false image of someone they are not, but someone they would like to emulate. Without a solid relationship with someone, it can be difficult to decide if their image is real or delusional. I have been conscious of self image since my youth. My life has provided me with many challenges and opportunities that have resulted in the evolution of my image that has transitioned from a rebellious teenager to a 55-year-old displaced worker going back to college.
Most people divorce due to uncertain, complicated reasons. Perhaps divorce is a way for some to escape insecurities or personal problems. It’s no secret that divorce has helped people run from their problems instead of facing them. It is easily arguable that divorce is the primary cause of family destruction and relationships. According to American Psychological Association, about 90 percent of the twenty-first century marry by the age of 50 (APA). The APA states that healthy marriages are essential for couples’ mental and physical health. They are also influential when raising children; it also acknowledges that raising children in a happy home shields them from mental, physical, educational and social problems. Nevertheless, approximately
In the study of macroeconomics there are several sub factors that affect the economy either favorably or adversely. One dynamic of macroeconomics is monetary policy. Monetary policy consists of deliberate changes in the money supply to influence interest rates and thus the level of spending in the economy. “The goal of a monetary policy is to achieve and maintain price level stability, full employment and economic growth.” (McConnell & Brue, 2004).
Monetary policy is the central bank’s use of increasing or decreasing the money supply or the base rate of interest to influence the level AD. It can be expansionary - used to take the economy out of recession by increasing the money supply and the interest rates and therefore increasing the AD.
In closing, Persuasion is a powerful tool, both in trying to persuade others and being
Propaganda is a specific type of message presentation aimed at serving an agenda. At its root, propaganda is to propagate (spread around) a certain position or point of view, rather than just reporting the facts. Most propaganda is associated with politics or war time. It is used to help unite countries, especially the U.S. in the past. [Pg. 1, sec. 1]
Everyone has their own political leaning and that leaning comes from one’s opinion about the Government. Peoples’ opinions are formed by what the parties say they will and will not do, the amounts they want spend and what they want to save. In macroeconomic terms, what the government spends is known as fiscal policy. Fiscal policy is the use of taxation and government spending for the purposes of stimulating or slowing down growth in an economy. Fiscal policy can be used for expansionary reasons, which is aimed at growing the economy and increasing employment, or contractionary which is intended to slow the growth of an economy. Expansionary fiscal policy features increased government spending and decreases in the tax rates as where contractionary policy focuses on lowering government spending and increasing tax rates. It must be understood that fiscal policy is meant to help the economy, although some negative results may arise.
In her article, How Does Our Language Shape the Way We Think, Lera Boroditsky (2009) explains how the results of her experiments support the idea that the structure of language shapes the way we think. In one of her experiments, she found that English speakers would place cards showing temporal progression in temporal order from left to right, Hebrew speakers would place them right to left, and that the Kuuk Thaayorre would place them from east to west. This shows that the written language affects how time is represented to them. In another one of her experiments, she asked German and Spanish speakers to describe some items and found that the masculinity or femininity of the noun in their respective languages affects how it is ultimately described. This can also be seen in how artists represent the human form of abstract entities like death. Boroditsky concludes that “Language is central to our experience of being human, and the languages we speak profoundly shape the way we think, the way we see the world, the way we live our lives.” (Core reader p. 49) I would like to add that language is also the foundation of a person’s culture, pride, and self by exploring articles written by Eric Liu, Amy Tan, and Gloria Anzaldua.
Speeches have been used for thousands of years to communicate ideas and influence others. Ralph Waldo Emerson; American poet, essayist and lecturer, once said, "Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. It is to bring another out of his bad sense into your good sense." He was correct, speech is indeed a powerful tool which has the ability to influence and persuade an audience; if an audience is positioned carefully and the speech is written in such a way that the audience 's emotions, logic and trust in the speaker are all appealed to. This is rhetoric. Rhetoric must be used in order for a speech to effectively convey information in such a way that an audience member is persuaded and influenced by the author’s ideas.
Monetary Policy involves using interest rates or changes to money supply to influence the levels of consumer spending and Aggregate Demand.

Susan Heitler) “Communication in relationships is like a river. When thoughts and feelings flow smoothly between marriage partners it 's fun, feels good, and helps support everyone around. However, when communication flow is turbulent, it 's potentially dangerous and destructive. And when communication gets blocked, pressure builds up. Then when the words start flowing again, they tend to come out suddenly in a damaging raging flood” If you and your spouse do not communicate effectively, you are both likely to experience frustration, anger and resentment. On the other hand, couples who communicate well experience fulfilled relationships, empathy and true intimacy with their spouses. Effective communication in marriage is perhaps the single most important aspect of a successful
