1. INTRODUCTION
Language is the primary medium of communication that it is perceived as an entire system comprised of three parts, cognitive, material and social (Gee & Hayes, 2011). The set of rules that shape the way language is written, spoken, and interpreted are known as cognitive language. Further, material language is something physical that can be seen or heard at a later time, this includes books, writings, recordings and websites (Gee & Hayes, 2011); while diverse and standard linguistics that are spoken and understood reflect social language (Gee & Hayes, 2011). It involves attaining the values, knowledge and skills to communicate with others effectively and to contribute confidently within family, school and community groups (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). Developing an understanding of social values and expectations gives children insight into who they are; and as they develop socially, they have the capacity to analyse the world around them and participate in determining their relationships, and their place in society. According to Vygotsky, language is a social concept that is developed through social interaction (Howell, 2012); he emphasises the importance of linguistic interaction with others, especially the caregivers, as a major factor in the development of a child (Fellowes & Oakley, 2014). When conversing with children, caregivers often use language that is slightly of a higher level than the children; consequently, giving them something to work towards and build upon their already acquired language skills (Fellowes & Oakley, 2014). Children in their early years are influenced by the treatment of their caregivers, and are more likely to have a higher self-esteem if they receive nurture and affection (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). When adults encourage children, they help them develop initiative and have pride in their achievements. From the most basic of functions like recognition and storage to the complexities of discourse and cultural expression, language functions are an integral and pervasive component of the human experience. In these pages I have sought to describe the operation of the six language functions through the analogy of a figure skater and a dancer. Each skill builds upon the next to weave the intricate set of skills and abilities that humans have uniquely developed to share information and each other’s experiences of the world.
The research intervention was developed and based on the theoretical ideas of Lev Vygotsky. Vygotsky theory states the importance of social interactions and assistance from an experienced adult, while the child is learning. (Driscoll, 2005). The research question was created with the idea that parental involvement and social interactions will have a positively affect in a students language development.
Vygotsky placed much more emphasis on language that Piaget (book). Vygotsky’s theory focuses on the role of interpersonal processes and the role of the child’s community and culture which provide a framework from which the child’s construction of meaning develops (book). Although Vygotsky stressed that the process must be in in the context of the child’s culture and the tools available within that culture. Vygotsky was always especially interested in cognitive processes which underline understanding which has led to the concept of shared understandings that occur when people communicate with each other. Vygotsky argued that through the use of language formed through social interaction a child can develop as a thinker and a learner (book). As a conscious individual people could not accomplish very much without the aids and tools within their culture such as language (book). Piaget argued that language was strongly influenced by the underlying cognitive structures within the individual child (book). They also disagreed on the egocentric speech of children. When observing children Piaget concluded that half of the mistakes children made was down to egocentric speech which he argued showed that children have not tried to communicate with another or adapted so others can understand them he also argued that young children did not seem to care if anyone else could understand them and

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a major topic of interest within the study of language development in children. It has been indicated as one of the most widely studied constructs in the social sciences (Bradley & Corwyn, 2002). Even with the wide variety of studies involving SES, there has never been a complete consensus on what SES actually represents. Beyond the development of language, SES also affects the overall development of a child. These developmental differences then further lead to differences in language acquisition. When looking at SES, there are many factors to consider. The concept of capital seems to best embody the current meaning psychologists hold of SES, according to Bradley and Corwyn (2002). Capital is favored because of its inclusion of access to financial (material resources), human (nonmaterial resources such as education) and social capital (social connections). The current working definition of SES involves family income, education level, and occupations, which influence the theories and characteristics that children develop (Hill, 2006). The effects of socioeconomic status on children are shown through many factors that affect language development through the child’s overall growth, their cognitive development, as well as their stress management and the parenting styles that they are exposed to.
There are many studies on communication, but from a fundamental approach Williams’ analysis of communication is that it is a basic human need, a basic human right; and more than this, it is a basic human power. To start with, I do not want to narrowly define language as merely verbal communication. Language is far broader than that. Although languages have common features, these social and cultural influences also create great diversity among languages and varieties, often leading to a perception that some varieties have greater value or status. In addition, social and cultural context play a large role in meaning-making. Children develop language as a result of social and cultural interactions, based on a growing awareness of the functions of language, and how language can be used. This understanding of the different types and uses of language increases as children experience language outside of the home.
