Introduction
To awaken from the dream means recognizing the illusory nature of this constricted self concept and perception of the body and mind, not as a means as of gasping at the ephemeral pleasures of the world or as a prison enclosing the self, but as an instrument for learning and communicating in various languages.
Before the Move
Two months before moving to New York, my friend William, thought he would be kind enough to warn me about the vast culture of the, “Big Apple.” William begins by telling me that I would not be able to survive the cultural diversity and I would not be able to get a good paying job or housing because of my ethnicity. Well, was he very wrong. Since I commuted to and from New York three times, a week I decided to put in a transfer from the company I was employed with to work in their satellite office in New York. When speaking with Cindy, one of the customer service representatives already living and working in New York, I mentioned to her that I was relocating to the New York office but did not have a place to live. Immediately, Cindy who I did not meet at the time offered me full living quarters with all the amenities for a charge of $445.00 a month. Gleefully, I accepted without even looking at the place.
Moving day
I had two oversized suitcases and my brother at my side, who kept telling me to, “You can make it.” Because I was somewhat familiar with my surroundings, it was no problem for me to jump on the “E” train from Manhattan to Queens, New York. It was not until my brother Jerry and I got to Jamaica Queens that William’s words replayed in my mind. “You will not be able to survive the cultural diversity.” There were so many people from different cultural background gathered in one place ranging from: Jamaican, Guyanese, Trinidadians, Indians, Hispanics, Caucasians, Blacks and Mexicans. They were shopping, walking, talking, waiting for the bus and catching the dollar vans, going to their different destinations.
After I stood there for a moment (relieving myself of the shock), while almost getting knocked down, I called Cindy on my cell phone to let her know I had arrived at the arranged pick-up spot. Prior to that day, when speaking with Cindy, I never knew she masked her Trinidadian accent.
Asian’s and Black’s struggle with the legacies of cruelty which in turn has reduced the value of human life to dust—the residue from refugee, slavery, and loss; all ties in together as we view souls who live in such a colorful place, but who originally viewed the world as black and white. Toronto embodies 2.5 million faces with many of whom originate from various places of the worl...
The desolate and chaotic conditions of the society can have a significant amount of influence on the development on a certain character of a novel. For instance, at the time the novel, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky was written, the conditions of the setting, was very chaotic and was in turmoil. Crime and Punishment took place in Russia, where Russia during the time Crime and Punishment was written was suffering due to economical downfalls and failure of the poor reforms of Tsar Alexander II; ultimately transforming Russia into a poverty-stricken country. The failure of Alexander’s reforms affected much of setting in which Crime and Punishment was written in, which ultimately contributed in character development of Raskolinokov. This is evident through the use of metaphor, which Dostoevsky uses to compare the state of the country to Raskolinkov’s apartment.
An ongoing battle of culture, freedom, and language occurs in America today. The battle is commonly called Bilingualism. The dictionary definition: being able to speak multiple languages. Though, when you dig deeper, you discover the hunger of differing tongues. Many people believe bilingualism should have a certain role in the public and education. One of these figures is Martin Espada who believe that bilingualism is also respecting one's culture. He believes that there should be more effort put into understanding different cultures and languages. An opposing figure to this is poet and author, Richard Rodriguez, who believes bilingualism should not be emphasized in the public and education system. Rather being able to speak one language and communicating is superior.
Southwest Airlines business opened for operations in 1971, after Rollin King and Herb Kelleher raised enough capital to finance their plan. Their service model broke off from the typical large airline policies and procedures. The typical model had an airline that was “home based” from a hub and ran routes to and from that location. This model added cost that Southwest wanted to avoid, causing them to implement point-to-point flights. The leadership team also made decisions to eliminate the inflight meal options to reduce overhead costs. Customer service and the overall experience of their customers became the valued operating vision and mission for Southwest. Eventually utilizing technology for online booking to the fullest potential saved precious time and gained efficiencies. Though the company started strong and grew slowly, several elements affected the long-term success of the company. Some of the factors that caused Southwest to reevaluate organic growth processes included not operating out of key United States hubs, the rise in fuel costs, and troubled contract negotiations.
Southwest Airlines is operating in an industry that is struggling to make profits. The slowing economic growth and raising fuel costs are lowering earnings while revenues remain the same. The macroeconomic factors affecting the airline industry include unemployment, the economic growth in the United States, and inflation. With low economic growth, consumers are finding luxury items more difficult to purchase and airline tickets for vacations fall into that category. Unemployment contributes to a lack of vacation travelers since individuals who are not employed do not have extra money for vacation or airline tickets. Inflation also causes operating costs of the airlines to be higher cutting into profits.
Southwest Airline’s greatest strength is their financial stability. They are able to maintain profits even when the industry is in economic crisis. Their financial success is in large part due to their low operational costs. Short haul, point-to-point trips allow them to save time and money. This not only provides faster trips to customers with shorter wait time, but also increase the amount of customer turnover which provides more profitability. Southwest should continue to operate at low costs so they may continue to provide low prices to their customers, since cheap flights is one of the keystones of the company.
The purpose of this assignment is to explain the impact of English language learners in the classroom. As a foreign student, English language learner in the United States faces multiple challenges for achieving academic success. To successfully complete a task, they need to master both English as a language and how it is used in core content classes especially when they are an adult. When trying to assist in instructing English language learners, they usually have many concepts and language abilities that they need to master, as do the teachers that are trying to teach them. With the incorporation of the concepts and approaches to identify and assess the issues and concerns that we have learned in our classroom instruction, such as lesson preparation,
Economics plays a huge role in the airline industry. For Southwest, the CEO states that they kicked off a “low fare revolution” back forty-five years ago when the company began. It was their goal to make flying affordable and convenient for the average man; flying was no longer going to be just for the elite. According to CEO Gary Kelly when Southwest Airline originated “only 15 percent of Americans had traveled by plane” (The Low-Fare Revolution). That number has currently risen to more than 85 percent of the United States population, with a large part of the credit going to Southwest Airline. All of this being said, one author notes that since
In the first paper we established the influence that culture has on language and the subsequent influence that dominant cultures have on lesser cultures through intimate interaction. We used two historical examples of France and its cultural influence on both Russia (an invited influence from the Russian monarchy) and England (an uninvited influence as a result of the Norman invasion). Now we examine the consequences of language as a social institution utilizing the same subjects (France, Russia, and England). We begin with the definitions of key terms:
Creating my own individual learning plan to address my unique learning needs is a type of learning is called Self Directed Learning (SDL). SDL is defined as a “process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning
Claim 7 states that language and culture shape the way we think. The Nominalist, Relativist, and Qualified Relativist positions present differing views on this claim. The Nominalist position states that thoughts are all the same regardless of the language through which they are expressed. This position suggests that the existence of different languages does not mean that people “inhabit different perceptual worlds” (Nature of Language, p. 154). Conversely, according to the Relativist position, the structure of a language determines perception of reality and also cultural patterns. Lastly, the Qualified Relativist position takes a more moderate stance and states that while language can influence perception, it does not completely determine them. This view presents language as less of a “prison,” but rather as something that “our culture has instilled in us” and contributes to shaping “our orientation to the world” (Nature of Language, p. 156).
Another internal challenge for Southwest Airlines is the conflicting management style and business operation with AirTran. On top of that, the external challenges such as the increase of competitions and gas prices are some of issues f...
The oppression that African American individuals endured for years, is still being practice with racial discrimination and prejudice. One strength of identifying as African American is the increase of belongingness that gave me the ability to share and live amongst individuals with the same physical appearance and in some cases, the same obstacles. However, this was not always the case. Growing into an adult gave me the advantage to travel and meet other African Americans that I believed shared some of the same historical and ethnic background. In this time period I was introduced to what is called within-group differences, which is the differences among the members of a group (Organista, 2010). Wanting to be around individuals that I believed to have a common core with was one of my flaws, but while traveling with individuals that I thought was like me I experienced that I had nothing in common with some of my travel friends. One of my friends stated that we had nothing in common with each other, because of our different social economic status, education and employment. At first I was offended, however, after taking psychology of ethnic groups in the United States there was a sense of understanding that not all individuals that look alike, are alike. This assumption that all groups function
He believed that the human body wasn’t done with evolving and we aren’t fully developed into what we are fully capable of. He says, “The death of God must be followed by a long twilight of piety and nihilism. Zarathustra 's gift of the overman is given to a mankind not aware of the problem to which the overman is the solution” (Nietzsche). People aren’t aware of the superman because they are too caught up in religion and democracy. This prevents people from thinking above the “herd” that Nietzsche talked about when describing the Christian faith. The superman is one who has complete free will and thinking, he does not look for what other find enjoyable instead seeks for what he or she wants. Nietzsche compares apes to men and asked the question of whether we are a laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. “What is ape to man? A laughing stock or painful embarrassment. And man shall be that to overman: a laughingstock or painful embarrassment” (Nietzsche). He is saying that we might be just as underdeveloped as an ape to what we are today as compared to us as the superman. This way of thinking shows that he felt that the human body could achieve so much more that what people think it is capable of, that art and culture are needed to continue development of the
Friedrich Nietzsche was without a doubt one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. He was a man who ventured to question all of man's beliefs. He was out to seek the important questions in life, not always their answers. Some consider Nietzsche to be one of the first existentialist philosophers along with Søren Kierkegaard. He was the inspiration for many philosophers, poets, sociologists, and psychologists including Sigmund Freud. His goal to seek explanations for society's commonly accepted values was an inspiration for Freud's psychoanalysis theory1. Nietzsche's life as well as his theories such as the will to power, the Übermensch, eternal recurrence, and his thoughts on religion all had a momentous affect on 19th and 20th century philosophy.
