Rather than reading the bible’s text in a historical approach, it helps to view the authors through a lens of literature with applications to historical context, the ideas and narratives are concepts and themes that relate to followers today just as much as they did in the past. Many of the narratives in both the Old and New Testament use historical references as starting points for their stories but include discrepancies allowing for interpretation, which make it more applicable to followers today. The book of Lamentations is written by the prophet Jerimiah, after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian people. By destroying the holiest place, their temple, the people of Zion went into a deep solace. Prophet Jerimiah goes on to depict Jerusalem as “desolate” (Lamentations 1: 4). The people of Jerusalem go on to repent their sins and realize the enormity of their actions, seen as a city of rebellion and lack of belief. The literature of Lamentations is dejected as people mourn the loss of their city and must become exiles of the place they once called hope. Lamentations describes a tragic scene, “All her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. ‘Look, Lord, and consider, for I am despised” (Lamentations 1: 11). The Jewish people mimic the confused and sad tone of the entire book of Lamentations. While most of the narrative of this book in the Old Testament is of Jeremiah lamenting over the heartbreaking effects that sin has on the world, there are a few verses where Jeremiah speaks of his hope and faith in the …show more content…

Rather than this idea, wisdom literature has the intent to be God posing question to the world; he urges people to look at the bigger picture. The book of Lamentations not only show the effect of sin on the world, but it also reminds people to ask for the Lord’s forgiveness and think about their sins. While the setting of the narrative and its contents may have been different, God’s relationship with his people remains pretty constant. God still serves as a guide for people, showing the consequences of their actions and reminding them of his love and the correct path when they have gone
