Lake Washington is a large freshwater lake near to the city of Seattle. It is the largest lake in King County and the second large natural lake in the state of Washington. It borders the cities of Seattle on the west, Bellevue and Kirkland on the east, Renton on the south and Kenmore on the north, and includes Mercer Island. The lake is fed by the Sammamish River at its north end and the Cedar River at its south.

Two major influent streams of Lake Washington are the Cedar river which located at southern end. It contributes about 57 percent of the annual hydraulic load and 25 percent of the phosphorus load. Form the north, water from Lake Sammamish via the Sammamish River contributes hydraulic load about 27 percent and phosphorus load about 41 percent. The headwaters of the Cedar River that lie in the closed Seattle Water Department watershed is the upper portion of the …show more content…

It led to further research and predictions that nutrient conditions would soon be stimulating nuisance algal conditions, as had been documented in Lake Zurich in Switzerland. Moreover, Lake Washington also studied by a former professor of zoology at the University of Washington named Dr. W.T. Edmondson. He studied the biology and chemistry of Lake Washington for many decades. He showed that phosphate was the culprit. He implicated phosphorus from sewage as being the element from treatment-plant effluent that fertilized algae in Lake Washington. Phosphorus was found in concentrations of 70 parts per billion in the 1960s. That was enough to feed the significant growth of algae that darkened the water and washed ashore to rot and smell. This finding had major implications for industry, and great political discussion resulted. Since then, Lake Washington has undergone major improvements, drastically improving the ecology and water quality, making the water twice as clear as it was in
