Lack of Judgment by King Lear
King Lear is a play written by William Shakespeare that focuses on the relationships of many characters, some good, and some evil. This is a great tragedy that is full of injustice at the beginning and the restoration of justice towards the end. The good are misjudged as evil and the evil are accepted as good. It is not until the end of the play that the righteous people are recognized as such. There is great treachery and deceit involved in the hierarchy of English rule. King Lear and Gloucester both make great mistakes by banishing their righteous children and trusting in treacherous characters.
Lear made the great mistake in this play when he decided to divide up his kingdom among his three daughters. In order to determine which share each should receive, he had each of his daughters give testimonies of love for him. Cordelia, the youngest, after listening to her sisters’ proclamations, refused to go overboard with her statement. When asked for her testimony, she simply replied, "Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave my heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty according to my bond, no more nor less"(I, i,91-93). Lear became enraged and cast her off saying, "Here I disclaim all my paternal care, propinquity and property of blood, and as a stranger to my heart and me hold this from thee for ever"(I,i,113-116).
In her simple proclamation of love for her father, Cordelia refrained from trying to persuade him to give her a portion of his kingdom. It was apparent early that Cordelia was struggling with what she was going to say to her father. In her asides she said, "What shall Cordelia speak? Love, and be silent"(I,i,62), and after Regan spoke...

.... However, justice seemed to be served somewhat at the end. I do believe that Cordelia was very good-natured and was the only "true" daughter of King Lear. In a play full of evil people, she was one of the few characters who was totally honest and loving. It is amazing that only through great hardships, such as Gloucester having his eyes plucked out, could he and Lear receive true insight.

he concept of nature is elusive, and humans have never had a positive and unified way to name and interact with it. Since the colonizing of America, many leaders have had different definitions of nature, and have held different views on humans’ relationship with nature. These views have often led to destruction masked as “progress” (Marx 14). But not all definitions of nature are so destructive. Ursula Goodenough, a biology professor at Washington University in St. Louis, wrote The Sacred Depths of Nature to create a new religion based in the physical, chemical, and biological laws that govern the universe (Department of Biology). Goodenough’s treatment of “nature” illustrates her unique interpretation of the word. Goodenough understands the word nature to mean life, and life means biology. She uses this definition to inspire humans to care for the world we live in. And while she recognizes that humans can be separate, she also shows how much a part of nature we truly are. Recently, a proposition has been made to define First Nature as biophysical and Second Nature as the artificial (Marx 20).
It is perhaps the most difficult intellectual challenge to a Christian how God and evil can both exist. Many of the greatest minds of the Christian church and intellects such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas spent their entire lives trying to solve this problem, and were unsuccessful (Erickson, 2009, p.439). However, this dilemma is not only an intellectual challenge, but it is emotional. Man feels it, lives it. Failing to identify the religious form of the problem of evil will appear insensitive; failure to address the theological form will seem intellectually insulting. This conundrum will never be completely met during our earthly life, but there are many biblical and philosophical resources that help mitigate it.
The two daughters are mad, because they heard about Lear dividing his kingdom. They don’t want to have to have to divide it; they wanted to control the whole thing. They don’t want Cordelia to control the kingdom because they are too envious towards her. Lear is trying hard to gain his daughters love from them, but it’s hard because they are into the materialistic stuff, that they don't care about him.

Evil can be characterized as or accompanied by misfortune or suffering; being unfortunate or disastrous. The presence of evil and suffering in our reality appears to present the argument of the existence of an immaculate God. In other words, the conclusion of the Basic Argument is that God doesn’t exist. If the conclusion is true, then perhaps the problem of evil is caused by human moral agents, not the deity or God. The conclusion matters if we want to understand why innocent people suffer.

After Kent delightfully brings the two together and Lear realizes who he is talking to, he begs for forgiveness: “Pray, do not mock me. / I am a very foolish fond old man, / Fourscore and upward, not an hour more nor less /....Do not laugh at me, / For as I am a man, I think this lady / To be my child Cordelia.“ (IV.vii.68-79). Lear has finally achieved self-awareness regarding his mistaken banishment of Cordelia, and proclaims to her in a surprising display of humility that he is just a “foolish fond old man.” Shocking the audience, Lear does not hold back his newfound sense of shame. He goes on: “Be your tears wet? Yes, faith. I pray, weep not. If you have poison for me, I will drink it. I know you do not love me, for your sisters Have, as I do remember, done me wrong. You have some cause; they have not.” (IV.vii.81-85). In another case of both humility and misjudgment, Lear believes that Cordelia no longer loves him due to his mistakes. Lear could not be more wrong because Cordelia 's love for her father is unconditional and still lives. Cordelia virtuously accepts his apology and assures him “No, sir, you must not kneel,” (IV.vii.67). Evil 's beginning can be found in Genesis chapter three when the serpent begins to tempt Eve. Evil can be anything of God 's creation that man has put a twisted spin on in order for it to be pleasurable or satisfying. Because humans find pleaure in evil, it begins to diminish the relationship to God, and blinds man from the truth of the gospel. Because of evil, some have tried to pin the point of evil onto God since He is the creator of everything, thus creating problems between God and evil by trying to draw distinctions between the two. The problem with evil is that it takes different forms, according to Erickson one form is that of religion when "some particular aspect of one 's experience has had the effect of calling into question the greatness or goodness of God, and hence threatens the relationship between the believer and God." 11 The next form is theological saying that "it is not a question of how a specific concrete situation can exist of light of God 's being what and who he is, but of how any such problem could possibly exist." 12 By identifying these different types of problems with evil, the soultion will be realized. One way of solving this debate is to leave the idea of God 's omnipotence. This approach is called finitism, which says that there are two principles within the universe, "God and the power of evil" 13
Lear's vision is marred by lack of direction in life, poor foresight and his inability to predict the consequences of his actions. He cannot look far enough into the future to see the consequences of his actions. This, in addition to his lack of insight into other people, condemns his relationship with his most beloved daughter, Cordelia. When Lear asks his daughters, who loves him most, he already thinks that Cordelia has the most love for him. However, when Cordelia says: "I love your Majesty according to my bond, no more nor less." (I, i, 94-95) Lear cannot see what these words really mean. Goneril and Regan are only putting on an act. They do not truly love Lear as much as they should. When Cordelia says these words, she has seen her sister's facade, and she does not want to associate her true love with their false love. Lear, however, is fooled by Goneril and Regan into thinking that they love him, while Cordelia does not. This is when Lear first shows a sign of becoming blind to those around him. He snaps and disowns her:
