The Mafia was once considered to be the largest functioning organization in the United States (Lecture PowerPoint, 2018). When people think and talk about the Mafia, they only focus on one of the original "mobsters", Al Capone and all of the movies that illustrate the organization, such as The Godfather series. As violent and intense as the movies and the theatrics may be, there is more to this intricate organization than just a fictional storyline, featuring mobsters, played by Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. The organizational structure of La Cosa Nostra is parallel to a lucrative family business. The 'family' is bound to omerta, which is a code of honor, prohibiting any member of the family from speaking about the organization and the criminal activities conducted by its members (Lecture PowerPoint, 2018). The 'families' have a direct correlation to a government structure. The head of the family is called the 'capo famiglia' or head of the house (Di Maria & Falgares, 2013). Organized crime has developed a stigma regarding its power and influence, especially during its hay day in the 1930’s. The mob has always been viewed as a powerful “family-like” organization. In Scarface, Hawkes brings the mafia into a seemingly more realistic light. By overturning Lovo’s position of power, Tony represents the idea of “every man for himself,” within a supposed organized group. The viewer steps into a cut-throat world of power hungry men, all trying to get rich quick. In this world, Hawkes asks, how can you organize men towards any goal if they all seek personal gain?

Its roots can be traced back to Sicily, where the Mafia was based on the premise that any member suffering an injustice was to take personal vengeance while avoiding all contact with legal authorities. Even in the modern day American Mafia, each family ruled it's own territory and when others from outside the territory interfered they were dealt with through violent methods.The wiseguys paid for their protection by paying the head of their local family. It is believed to have started during Sicily's late Middle Ages, beginning as separate bonds of strong-arm enforcers hired by local landowners. It eventually evolved into a network of independent groups governing in rural areas. With the Sicilian immigration of the late 19th century, the Mafia began to operate in several large United States cities. During the period of Prohibition it monopolized the trade in bootleg liquor and controlled loan sharking, gambling, and prostitution. Competing Mafia families established mutually recognized territories, reaching agreement by negotiation or by intimidation. By the mid-1930 the Mafia had taken on the institutionalized structure that is now typical of organized crime in the United States.
Family is one of those words that have a significant meaning to various individuals. Family may be viewed one way to an individual and another way to someone else. Family consists of those who have played a particular role in one’s life, whether it is positive or negative. In this paper, I will assess Reymundo’s family both nuclear and extended and speak of how his family has become significant in his life and how they have played a role in his decisions. Though the court case of the “Scandal at the Church” has no documented resolution, historical fact and conjecture leads to the belief that Mr. de Alfaro would not only lose the case, but family as well. From class and honour, to gender norms, race and maritally acceptable jealousy, there is nothing to support Mr. de Alfaro’s plea to convict this wife’s attackers. Knowing that Mr. Bravo had several other pending court cases and no prior convictions further suggests that the Bravo family was virtually untouchable, while Mr. de Alfaro’s family was simply expendable. Though 18th century Mexico was an extreme time, elements of such places have remained though the years as illustrated by prejudices and discrimination in the modern day world, leading to – similar to the court case – many injustices going unpunished due to vastly similar factors. With class and race are subtle factors in the modern day court system, the system does not seem to be on a path of change, though things have bettered over the years.

Although barely able to read and write, he believed that he possessed an uncommon strength of will to be sinister. This trait would soon help him to rise to the high rank in the Mafia. After arriving in America, he was amazed at the grand vastness of the buildings and streets he was surrounded by, but moreover, by the attitude of the new people around him. They walked briskly, giving him the impression that all had an urgent mission to perform.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story, “One of These Days,” describes the disparity between everyday working class people and higher class politicians. The story focuses mainly on two contrasting characters: a humble dentist, Aurelio Escovar, and an aggressive and abusive mayor who takes advantage of his townspeople. Deep in this piece, the situation between the two characters symbolize the corruption of power and the negative influence it can put on society. Though the mayor owns all of the dominance out of everyone in the town, the dentist receives influence for a period of time, taking advantage of it at all cost. We learn at the end of the passage that no matter the identity nor class of an individual, the excess of power can lead to corruption.
