Identity Politics are arguments in politics that focuses on the self-interest and perspectives of self-recognized social interest groups and methods where in people’s politics can be formed based on their aspects of their own identity through social organizations. (Cressida, n.d.) Identity politics is a phenomenon that started first at the radical borders of liberal democratic societies in which rights of people are renowned. Likewise, the expression "Identity Politics" is not typically used to allude to developments inside single-gatherings or tyrant states that are radical. (Kauffman, 1990)
The practice of Identity Politics has already existed for a long time, but the term and the movements that are connected to it really started during the end of the 20th century. There are diverse developments in which Identity Politics are discovered, examples are class, gay and lesbian, feminist, inability, and ethnic movements and these movements are retroactively connected to Identity Politics. Without religion as a source of identity, it became fundamentally easy for ideas and ideology such as communism, social norms, and communism to became a person’s identity instead. After all, society’s citizens are always looking to unite through each of their identities.

Identity is one of the main questions throughout all of our readings, because it is hard for people to accept who they are in society. Accepting their identity as a minority with little if any freedoms sparks many of the social problems which I will show happening in all communities and cultures. The main issue we will discuss is how social environments effect the search for identity. The Mexicans in the U.S. module gives us examples how Mexicans try to keep their customs while living in a discriminated environment by the Whites. This module also gives us examples how people are searching for personal identity while struggling with cultural traditions. Finally, the African-American module gives us more examples to compare with the Mexicans in the U.S. module, because these readings deal with Blacks finding personal identity also through discrimination from the Whites. In Stuart Hall’s “Ethnicity: Identity and Difference,” he claims that identity is a volatile social process through which one comes to see the self. Hall argues that identity is not a thing rather a process “…that happens over time, that is never absolutely stable, that is subject to the play of history, and the play of difference.” These factors are constantly entering the individual in a never-ending cycle, re-establishing and affirming who one is.
We want to belong to groups that are distinctive and positively valued. This has some important implications on the groups in the movie. Because people are motivated to evaluate themselves positively, they tend to evaluate positively those groups to which they belong and to discriminate against groups they perceive to pose a threat to their social identity. For instance, in the fight for proposition 6, the Christian group, despite being rarely active in politics in general, hugely supports Briggs to maintain their distinctiveness and kick gay group out of the social cycle. The idea of the development of a social identity is a new one to me. For the majority of my life, including the present-day, I had always considered my social identity to be complete. I am Latino. Perhaps it was due to the fact that in my past experiences, I have little experience with the adverse effects of racism. However, it is indeed obvious to me that this is not nearly the case for everyone else. What is identity? Identity is an unbound formation which is created by racial construction and gender construction within an individual’s society even though it is often seen as a controlled piece of oneself.
