Lyndon Baines Johnson, also known as LBJ, was the 36th president of the United States. LBJ was very much involved in the political field as a Democrat, and he is one out of four people who served in all four elected federal offices of the United States (Representative, Senator, Vice President, and President). LBJ became president due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy as he was his running mate for the 1960 presidential election. He designed a piece of legislation called “Great Society” that included decrees that made a significant impact not only then, but today as well. These rights include Medicare, environmental protection, “War on Poverty”, etc.
Many people had mixed feelings about our former president Lyndon B. Johnson. Some felt he was a compassionate individual and remembered him as a caring, generous, thoughtful man who dedicated his life to benefitting the citizens of this country. Conversely, some felt he was dictatorial and failed to do his duty as a political figure. During his presidency, LBJ had to make some difficult decisions, as do all presidents. One of the most vital decisions he made was to stop the bombing of North Vietnam. LBJ was motivated on our military involvement in Vietnam. He was adamant about stopping all communist expansion with his containment policy. Another great commitment LJB made to this country was that of improving civil rights. A few days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made a suggestion to LBJ. King advised that he could pay tribute to the death of President Kennedy by enacting some of the policies he had been working on – most importantly civil rights.
