The ongoing war between both sides of the issue may never die down, however the many states that have changed their laws has revolutionized the way the issue is seen on the legal standpoint. In 2009, the California Supreme Court ruled ... ... middle of paper ... ...nd have been advocating change for the past decade. The women of the 20th century were treated unfairly and had their rights violated just like the homosexuals are today. To deny someone’s ability to marry is a violation of their civil rights. As seen earlier this year when the Supreme Court ruled that DOMA was unconstitutional, same sex marriage should be recognized at all state levels and on the federal level.
People began to become paranoid about gay people because of the strict laws that America had put in place against them. This stereotype, created decades ago, still affects gay people today, usually negatively (Eskridge). For example, it was actually illegal for openly gay members to participate in the United States Military for many years. America was following Clinton’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy. It wasn’t until 2011, by the doings of Barack Obama, that the policy was lifted and homosexuals were allowed to be in the Military (Dunham).

Imagine a government that denies 1,138 rights and benefits to a certain group of people who have not broken any laws. Would you support this government? In the United States, same-sex couples face exactly this kind of discrimination. Since the 1920’s the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans) community has been fighting for equality, starting with the Society of Human Rights in Chicago, the earliest known gay rights organization (“American” 1). The movement transformed completely from a couple of activists to a widespread protest in the 1969 Stonewall Riots.
Therefore, I believe that same sex marriages should not be legalized in America. This is simply because children are being taught that there are only people created in the world, which are categorized as male and female, secondly, the American laws will be diluted, and most importantly, same-sex marriages are a sin. Historically, gay uprising did not really originate in America until the late 1960’s. Once a group of patrons at a gay bar fought back against the policeman who invaded the bar in New York City called, The Stonewall Inn, there arose a massive riot that lasted three days. But, at the time homosexuality was illegal in the United States devaluing sodomy laws.
