Instead of Lina’s usual hatred towards Kretzsky, she shows sympathy once she learns more about him. In his time of weakness, Lina sees him more like a person rather than a soldier. Once Lina’s mother has passed, Lina is felt emotionally drained even more than she once was. While walking to find some wood to help them withstand the cool winter air, Lina sees a different Kretzsky than normal. He was full of sorrow. From the visible bottle in his hand, his drunken state was apparent. The audience sees compassion from Lina rather than her normal bitterness. The change of attitude changes the audience's thinking.
For it is human decency, of course Lina comforts him as he retells the sad details of his life outside of being a guard. Although,
