Historically ideology and the notion of people have been changed through time. Racism has been changing as the era changes. Racism is always a critical social issue because there were many cases of discrimination for hundreds of years. Most of all, in the United States, racial discrimination to African Americans have been a sensitive issue not only politically but culturally. Following a river to its origin of racism, African Americans were brought to the United States to be sold as slaves. Although slavery was abolished, they are still experiencing the discrimination. Same as the United States, in Korea, there is some segregation between people residing in Korea since early times and people who immigrate to Korea. However, as times go by, …show more content…

In previous generations, many immigrants came in Korea for earning money, but as a homogeneous country from ancient times, Korean had no experience of other races and did not know how to treat other ethnic group. So, many Korean treated them as stranger or people who steal our materials. For example, an employee gave a toy bill as salary to foreign laborer who is from Vietnam after intense labor. These days, there are many critical opinions about racism. Following this trend, many television programs concerning various cultures and ethnics spring up such as “chat with beautiful women” and “unusual conference”. In “unusual conference” television program, about 12 people from other countries appear and they are talking about hot issues concerning world problem. Motor of this program is “younger’s eyes to the world with shaking thought of the older generation”. This program is good for knowing world issues, but most of all, this program help young generation understand different thought of other countries and have the opportunities to accept diversity of ethnics. Therefore, same as the United States, Korean new generation can understand the difference of culture and value diversity of races by these programs. For example, according to the Washington Post, 31 percent of Millennials rate blacks as lazier than whites and 23 percent of Millennials think blacks less intelligent than whites. In other statistics written in sight of black voice, it says that blacks and Hispanics still live in poorer neighborhoods than whites with working class incomes. In addition, there is a big gap in wealth between white Americans and non-white Americans. As shown in statistics, with comparable income, average neighborhood poverty is different for race. In poor households (income below $40,000), gap was bigger than middle-income households and affluent households. Especially, 21.8% black non-Hispanic has poverty following Hispanic, Asian and White. The other graph shows that the racial wealth gap was wider than about 20 years ago. In 1984, the gap is $85,070 between African American families and white families, but in 2009, the gap between two countries is $236,500. From these statistics, in America, discrimination to Black is severe.
There are many causes of this discrimination in America. Social scientists speculate that the cause is historic patterns of prejudice, discrimination, and racism.
