Recommended: Anatomy of the damage of an acl injury

Reason for Visit: Acute Left Knee Pain S: TM reports Acute Left Knee Pain. According to the TM, she was stepping into cell down the stairs and sudden pain shot though her left knee to mid tight. Reports the initial pain was sharp shooting like pain; 10/10. After Ice X 20 minutes helped to decreased her pain to 8-9/10. Now TM describes her pain as pulsation, located in her lateral and back of her knee. TM denies previous injury to the left knee. TM denies numbness, tingling, or loss of movement in her left leg. O: no malalignment, no atrophy, no swelling of the knee, no ecchymosis, mild warmth to the medial knee; no erythema; no effusion palpated. Reports tenderness to lateral and popliteal knee with palpation. Full active and passive

The blood and metabolic panel exposed several abnormal labs. A red blood cell count of 3.99, white blood cell count of 22.5, hemoglobin of 10.9, hematocrit of 33.7%, sodium level of 13, potassium level of 3.1, carbon dioxide level of 10, creatinine level of 3.24, glucose level of 200, and a BUN level of 33 were the abnormal labs.

However, according to “ACL Injuries and Female Athletes” (n.d), as Title IX was implemented in 1972, female participation in numerous sports has dramatically increased. Moreover, the rate of acquiring injuries to the ACL also has dramatically increased (Anonymous, n.d). In terms of comparing the rate of acquiring ACL injuries between two genders, females have higher rate than males do. According to the “Physical Therapy Corner” (2007), “women suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries more often than men, nearly 4 times as often in basketball, 3 times as often in gymnastics, and nearly 2 and a half times as often in soccer” (Knee Injuries section, para.1).
