Kiss land by The Weeknd
Abel Tesfaye known as The Weeknd released a new album called Kiss land. The album contains ten tracks that last over an hour and a half. Tesfaye is known for the dark and moody tracks produced in his last three mix tapes (Echoes of Silence, Thursday, and House of Balloons), and later repackaged from Republic Records as The Trilogy. His rhythmic voice is just stunning. Though most of his songs on this album are repetitive, the different beats mix it up. Tesfaye’s new album is honestly worth buying. He became an internet sensation and soon recorded his own album.
In each song of Kiss Land, a story of his life is being told. The album includes the musical range of soulful R&B to 80’s pop music. The very first song on the album is “Professional” which Tesfaye is singing about him dealing with not letting anyone know who he really is. Tesfaye never let anyone knew who he really was until Kiss land came out to the public. “Professional” is explaining the feeling of not being a part of the world. The song “Adaption” tells a story about Tesfaye drinking his pain away and using alcohol to forget the troubles of being on tour. The song “Tears in the Rain” the chorus sounds triumphant but is missing a past lover and how he has to adjust to fame. And loving someone else is pointless like “tears in the rain”, “They all feel the same,” he shouts, about the other women that comes into his life. The song, “Wanderlust”, is the only song that has a more upbeat tone out of the entire album; this song was inspired by Michael Jackson. “Wanderlust” tells the story of drug addiction; “precious little diamond” is a symbol for crystal meth.

Another reason why this album is so great is that now his voice is more prominent. Unlike the last albums, you don’t get lost in the tone and drift off into space. With Kiss Land, it’s more soulful and personal. This album is all the emotions he is feeling and his wonderfully put in a sedative song. Tesfaye meant to make people feel something and get in touched with their inner self. The depressing tone in songs like Kiss Land or Belong to the World creates a more narcotic/daydream vibe, while other songs, such as Wanderlust, gives people something to dance to. This album is definitely worth buying. In his latest interview with Billboard, Abel Tesfaye says “This is the real deal, the last albums was just the practice round”.

The song has heavily used imagery when stating “And the Legal pads were yellow, hour’s long, pay packet lean. And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been.” This is used to explain his stress of coming back to civilization after war and all the things that once traumatized you are now take place in a different way. The first girl mentioned is Lisa, she feels alone in the world, her mother is a drug addict and likes to bring many men home. The song talks about things in the beginning work out well, but later on in the night, the mom and the man end up fighting. The men beat Lisa and when Lisa tries to tell her mom, her mom does not believe her. Lisa’s story can specifically relate to marriage and family because she does grow up in a functional family. The mother is a drug addict and does not take care of her daughter, it is mentioned that there is no father because the mother brings home men every night. The fact that Lisa does not have a stable family and no one to look up to is affecting her life negatively. The men that her mother does bring home, abuse Lisa and mistreat her. Lisa is a nine year old girl, she is too young to be experiencing the things she does. There is probably no main income for her family either, and if her mom does get paid, she will probably use that money towards buying more drugs. This can relate to the poverty aspect because people who grow up in poverty cannot even afford to survive on minimum wage alone. I have always said the only thing I miss of a past girlfriend is her collection of Barenaked Ladies albums. After recreating her collection for myself, I learned that a new album was on the way. Maroon -- the band's sixth album is filled with 12 brand new songs with enough quirkiness and pop that will forever be the marks of the Barenaked Ladies (BNL). To my surprise Don Was, a Grammy Award winning producer whose name was also on my B-52's and Rolling Stones albums, produced this album. This pop-infused CD displays the BNL's signature of happy, jangly, tunes filled with sarcasm, irony, truth and passion embedded into every song that brings out old memories to everyone.
This song talks a lot about the baggage of the past that people hold onto instead of letting it go. All that baggage is only going to end up hurting you more and more instead of helping you in any way possible. An example is the opening
He discusses how his mom got him christmas presents and how he was shocked due to being from a very poor family due to not having the advantage of being white. He continues to say how his emotions are pouring out of him as in he is letting all of the stuff that he has gone through that was hard out and he is ready to let it all out for the best of his health. He mainly discusses the pain he has gone through and how it is hard growing up as a young black male. After this main song, he continues to open up on how he coped with this heartache that he has gone through.
The second song on the album, “Two Step”, is about Dave needing a break from his busy lifestyle and going to the woman he loves and she "drives me to distraction". She comes to him when he has "grown tired of water all the time" and she is the wine that will quench his thirst (Lyrics). He needs a change and she gives it to him making him realize that he should celebrate life more.
Naturally when a song explores themes like these it seems explore depressing and dark themes, this is seen through the tone throughout the song. The first example of tone in the song is in the lines “The Smell , The Taste it’s all just fake, the truth is what I lack’ (19-20), these lines show that the writer is feeling like the whole account of addiction and the situation that he is in feel almost fake because of how surreal it all feels. The second example of tone is that found right before one of sets that portray imagery, “But it’s all so fake” (34) these line prove as a warning for the listener of the lies of the passage that follows, again showing that the writer is omitting his addiction as some that is fake and cannot not be real. A third and final example of tone in the Classic Crime’s God and Drugs is in the line “of the things I need to face” (52) this line tells the listener that the writer has the sense that he needs to face his problems and cannot escape them on a daily basis; this shows that the song has a regretful, self-apologetic tone and describes that the writer of the song feels almost like that his addiction is something that he has to face and cannot turn around from his old ways. The song depicts the energy and the adrenaline the main character gets from racing, but it also shows how it affects his girlfriend. This song depicts a choice the man has to make. Live the life a racecar driver or set aside his dream and give his girlfriend the ability to have the American Dream. The racecar life was not ideal to the girlfriend and Springsteen sings about her sadness and desperation of living the life of a racecar divers girlfriend. The girl craves to live a normal life, or the American Dream, but her boyfriend ultimately has to decide if he wants to sacrifice his dream to give his girlfriend hers. Springsteen sings, “But all of her pretty dreams are torn,” clearly show how concerned and broken this girl is because she craves a different lifestyle (“Racing Streets”). The main character in this song must sacrifice something in order to keep his girlfriend happy, or the girlfriend has to sacrifice a normal life to assure happiness of her boyfriend. In Coldplay’s song, “Paradise”, the songwriters use exaggerative language, personification, and rhetorical techniques to tell the story of a little girl’s escape from the harshness and disappointment of reality. The listeners of this song are treated to a beautifully written story about a girl’s maturity through the struggles and disappointment that life has offered to her. Some of the most effective ways that the songwriters explain the plight of the girl are when they attach the listener emotionally with her plight through their use of exaggerated language and personification. Ultimately, the girl copes with her situation and shows signs of maturity; which, enforces the emotional connection that the audience feels with her.
