“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” (Dr. King). Martin Luther King was one of the greatest civil rights activist of his time: he didn’t believe in violence as solving the issue of equal rights he believed the issue could have been resolved with peace and tranquility. Dr. King believed equal rights is something worth fighting for and eventually the nation believed it was worth fighting for as well. we all know as one of the most inspirational civil rights activist in history. On December 15, 1955 African Americans began the bus boycott, and King was elected president for the Montgomery Improvement Association ( “Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). A huge turning point in the event of the bus boycott was the Supreme Court ruling bus segregation illegal on December 3, 1956 (“Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). In January of 1957 Dr. King became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to be able to fight segregation and achieve civil rights (“Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). Dr. King speaks to 15,000 people in Washington D.C. on May 17,1957. (“Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). On April 20, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested in Birmingham, Alabama, for demonstrating without a permit, he write a letter in jail the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” this begins desegregation movement in Alabama (“Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). An agreement in Birmingham desegregated stores, schools and restaurants on May 10, 1963.(“Martin Luther King Jr Timeline”). On June 23, 1963 Dr. King led 125,000 people on a freedom walk in Detroit, Michigan (“Martin Luther King Jr. Timeline”). inspired many people to fight with peace and tranquility during the Civil Rights Movement in order to be able to accomplish getting equal rights. He was able to accomplish everything he did in his lifetime with the support of his family and the people who inspired him, and all Americans who thought equal rights was worth fighting for. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most important civil rights activist because he fought in peace and not violence which inspired many Americans to fight with him rather than against him. Not only did he face segregation in his life, but he didn’t let that stop him, during the civil rights movement he really made a difference in American society, and he inspired others to become civil rights activist and he still has a big impact in society
