North Korea is one of the world’s most secluded and isolated nations. It gradually became more and more secluded during the 1980s. The increasing isolation of North Korea had to do with the tension between North Korea, the United States and South Korea; two of North Korea’s greatest enemies. Kim Jong Il became North Korea’s powerful leader in 1994, succeeding his father, Kim Il Sung, who had been training Kim Jong-Il for 20 years to rule North Korea. For almost two decades, Kim Jong Il controlled every single aspect of North Korea. Through his strict policies, terroristic actions, and his relationships with other nations, Kim Jong Il became known as one of the most harsh and influential leaders in history.
Kim Jong Il spent his childhood amid the Second Sino-Japanese War, which lasted eight years from 1937 to 1945. The war was primarily between China and Japan, but China fought with the economical help of The Soviet Union, Germany, and The United States. Kim jong Il had deep military knowledge from an early age, and around age ten, he learned about the military by standing next to the table mapping out plans of operation at headquarters. While attending Namsan Higher Middle School in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Il was an active member of Children’s Union. Children’s Union is a youth organization which promotes Kim Il Sung’s political thesis named Juche. Kim Il Sung’s political thesis, Juche, which translates to “self-reliance” in english, is the state ideology of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

The North Korean government under the strict leadership of Kim Jong Il has a history of enforcing strict policies and being corrupt. North Korea being a more isolated nation would make it easier to take control the susceptible mind...

In 1994, Kim Jong Il signed an agreement with the US that said North Korea would dismantle its own nuclear program in return for arranging for construction by an outside party of two nuclear reactors capable of producing electric power. The agreement, in 2002, began falling apart due to Kim Jong Il not adhering to the terms; Kim announced that year that North Korea had been producing weapons of mass destruction.
