Kids feel safe in Boston public school environment
A Boston high school student stood alone, waiting for a public bus to take him home after school had let out. When he was approached by a group of kids who attempted to assault him, his first instinct was to run.
He did not run to a neighbor's house. He did not bother to look for a police station. He simply ran to the safest place he knew — his school.
He proceeded to bang on the double doors until a custodian reluctantly opened them. But it didn't matter. The kids had already dispersed when the student reached the school grounds.
"He clearly thought it was a safe-haven because he ran back to the building and begged to get in," said John D. Sisco, the chief of school police in Boston.
Sisco said students over the last 10 years have come to view their schools as an escape from the outside world.
"In general, I believe the kids do feel safe," Sisco said. "Kids tell us that it's dangerous in the streets."
In September, a 15-year-old Charlestown High School student was shot in the leg while walking to volunteer at a Boys & Girls Club after school.
Boston Police Captain Bernard O'Rourke said the shooter was standing on the corner of Bunker Hill and Polk Streets, about 150 yards from the school, at about 2 p.m. when school let out.
After the incident, extra police officers were temporarily assigned to cover the school, but they were soon called away to deal with other incidents.
"It would be nice if they would have a police car there at dismissal but it just happened that day that there was no police car there," said Headmaster Michael Fung.
Nathalie Martinez, who has lived in the development behind the school for 10 years, told the Boston Globe right after the incident that "usually it's pretty quiet around here, except when it's during the school year. It's crazy, and it's only the beginning of the school year. What's going to happen in the middle?"
In response to this comment, Fung said of his 1,190 student campus, "it's always quiet if there are no people around."
"Charlestown has the lowest crime rate in Boston," Fung said. "Lower than Beacon Hill."
He said things like the shooting are "unpredictable" and that it was an "isolated case."
"I usually go home real late, at like 8 or 9 [p.m.], and just go there to the bus stop and nothing ever happens.
“As Connecticut State Police spokesperson Lt. Paul Vance stated, ‘Were there other people detained? The answer is yes. In the height of battle, until you’ve determined who, what, when, where and why of everyone in existence ... that’s not unusual.’ ” (Mikkelson). Chris Manfredonia was set free when police discovered he was running through the woods because he heard “popping sounds” coming from the school. Fearing something had happened to his six year old daughter, he immediately raced to the school (Mikkelson). The unidentified man led from the forest in handcuffs wearing Camo and carrying a rifle, turned out to be a “tactical squad police officer from another town” (Mikkelson). Christopher Rodias name can be heard over the police radio, but he was busy during the shooting, and officers can account for it. He was busy being pulled over by police nowhere near the school, there are only so many ways to communicate long distance by radio and officers often accidently talk over one another. This is simply something police officers must deal
At 11:19 in the morning of April 19, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold stood at the west entrance of Columbine High School preparing for the deadliest shooting in American school history. One of them yelled, "Go! Go!," and then the two pulled out their shotguns and began firing, killing two students almost immediately (Jefferson County 3). Harris and Klebold began moving through the school randomly shooting students, detonating pipe bombs, and yelling about how much fun they were having. While this was happening, Coach Dave Sanders and other heroes were frantically trying to get students out of harm's way. At 11:26, while running past the library warning students of the killers, Sanders was shot by one of the shooters. He made it into a science room where first aid was administered by students. He died several hours later in that same room. The worst killing took place in the library during a span of about eight minutes starting at 11:29. Ten students were killed and twelve others were wounded. After leaving the library, Harris and Klebold wandered around the school in movements that appeared to be "extremely random" (Jefferson County 18). They eventually returned to the library at about 12:08 and killed themselves. In 49 minutes, 14 students were left dead, one teacher was left dying, 23 people were injured, and an entire community's sense of safety and security was shattered.

If there is a shooter inside the school campus then students will take out their guns too and start shooting at the target. Then when the campus police go to the scene they will not know who the real target is. Cops are trained to take out whoever may be a danger to someone else or to them. If they don’t know who the real target is then there will be many mistaken shots by the cops. According to “Why Our Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Handguns”, “The campus police said that the probability would have been high that anyone emerging from a classroom at Norris Hall holding a gun would have been shot”
The Precambrian Era is when the Earth formed. Earth was barley a spec of dust in outer space and as time went by it gathered ice, rock and more dust particles. It eventually formed into a big rock flying around in space. The Earth was extremely hot and so when it rained the rain would evaporate in mid air or immediately after it hit the ground. But even though it evaporated these great rains cooled the Earth eventually building up water in lower areas creating oceans. The Earths atmosphere was water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and gases. After awhile oxygen level grew in the atmosphere. The earliest life forms were single celled organisms that lived in the oceans. These organisms used light energy to produce food called photosynthesis. These were called Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. The evolution of multi celled organisms were Dramatic in change.
...d to United States, I was grateful that I made the decision to move. When my family visited, I was able to cherish every moment with them because I knew how difficult life without them. I was grateful to have my family. Their endless support and advice, helped me to improved myself. Lived independently in United states, I grew as a better person, I learned how to planned a better time management and to be responsible on my priority.
The teacher rounded up my entire class and ordered us to be completely quiet. We were just informed that we are now under a lockdown, and I don’t think this is necessarily a practice one either. My phone just started to vibrate. As I glanced down at my phone, I heard a distant ‘pop’, ‘pop’ coming from inside the cafeteria. The sound reminded me of popcorn popping in the microwave. Most of the people in my class started to become very unsettled, and then it hit me. The emergency notification on my phone was just another confirmation that there were active shooters in my school. The shooters turned out to be troubled students that thought the only way to get their point across was to take it into their own hands. This is just one of the many scenarios when people that shouldn’t have access to guns find a way to get weapons inside their grasp
Edgar Allan Poe is undoubtedly one of American Literature's legendary and prolific writers, and it is normal to say that his works touched on many aspects of the human psyche and personality. While he was no psychologist, he wrote about things that could evoke the reasons behind every person's character, whether flawed or not. Some would say his works are of the horror genre, succeeding in frightening his audience into trying to finish reading the book in one sitting, but making them think beyond the story and analyze it through imagery. The "Fall of the House of Usher" is one such tale that uses such frightening imagery that one can only sigh in relief that it is just a work of fiction. However, based on the biography of Poe, events that surrounded his life while he was working on his tales were enough to show the emotions he undoubtedly was experiencing during that time.
Schools are safe places. However, the American public has become increasingly concerned with crime in schools and the safety of students. In part, this concern has been shaped by the highly publicized acts ...
Imagine turning into someone unrecognizable and watching as your life rips apart, a life that you worked so hard for, because all hope is lost. You have hit the bottom of “the well of life”, and deep inside this “well of life” you understand it’s all because of students.
Bullying, often dismissed as a normal part of growing up, is a real problem in our nation's schools, according to the National School Safety Center. One out of every four schoolchildren endures taunting, teasing, pushing, and shoving daily from schoolyard bullies. More than 43 percent of middle- and high-school students avoid using school bathrooms for fear of being harassed or assaulted. Old-fashioned schoolyard hazing has escalated to instances of extortion, emotional terrorism, and kids toting guns to school. It is estimated that more than 90 percent of all incidents of school violence begin with verbal conflicts, w...
The schools had also brought in school officers to have on school grounding during school hours. They feel that they need these type of secured to have their children protected. Parents feel a little say knowing that there is a police in school patrolling. In several school they have started to do searches to make sure no one is bring anything dangerous that could harm a person. This is super important to makes sure no weapons are on school grounds. Schools have also put on their policy that if any weapon is found on the person’s possession there could be serious
Even when people call the police, it takes time for the police to come and shooting does not take that much time to kill people. To solve this problem, I think the campus safety should carry guns. Also, teachers may have a right to have guns, too. When the shooter comes into the classroom, the teachers are the only adults that can protect the students. To protect children, they all have to be trained how to use the gun.
And when he got there he saw that it was full of Brown shirt thugs who
The Duke then tries to change the tone of the conversation by appealing to the small amount of humanity that Shylock has left. His words are in stark contrast to the true nature of Shylock. The Duke makes a desperate plea by saying. But his belief lacks a sense of reality, as Shylock has repeatedly suggested that he wants nothing more than a pound of Antonio’s flesh, and has also never shown any sign of mercy or forgiveness. In this speech, the Duke tries relentlessly to persuade Shylock himself that these feelings do in fact exist, and Shylock should, therefore, act reasonably in his decision of whether or not to seek the proper forfeiture of his bond. The Duke also asks Shylock to step out of the stereotype of the alienated Jew. He begs: Shylock’s response to this request falls directly in line with Antonio’s notion of his character. Shylock states:. In asking for his “due,” Shylock implies that there is justice to be handed down here, not realizing or not caring about the clear injustice of taking a bout of...
