Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, manage, and evaluate emotions in yourself and others around you. The key principles of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Self-awareness is the ability to recognize personal emotions, emotional triggers, and limitations. Self-regulation is the ability to manage emotions so they do not have a negative effect. Motivation is the inner drive that comes from the personal joy experienced after an accomplishment. Empathy is the ability to recognize, understand, and experience the emotions of another person. The program was meant to enhance resilience, decrease post-traumatic stress, decrease the incidence of undesirable and destructive behaviors, and lead to a greater likelihood for post adversity growth and success. The overall goal of the CSF program was to build strength in five areas including physical, emotional, social, family and spiritual. Each area of strength in the program is affected by a Soldier’s well-being, meaning how balanced an individual is in their understanding and confidence in themselves, their relationship with others, and with their environment. In order to address each strength in the CSF program, the Army must include awareness and training in emotional intelligence. (Sewell, 2017) Emotional intelligence involves understanding oneself and others, relating to people and adapting to and coping with one’s immediate surroundings in order to be more successful in dealing with environmental demands. It’s about understanding your own emotions and the emotions of those around you in order to be successful. (Sewell, 2017) The emotional intelligence bar-on model can be split into five categories including intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management, and general mood. Although each category has a key component in the CSF program, the intrapersonal and interpersonal affect dimensions of emotional and social fitness in the CSF program the most. (Army, 2017) Although the program does help Soldiers who are emotionally incompetent and raises awareness to the issue of leadership not using emotional intelligence, I believe the one principle of emotional intelligence that can really impact a Soldier’s performance and job satisfaction is motivation. Most Soldiers act a certain way and refuse to do the right thing not because they’re bad people, but because they lack the motivation to do so. Soldiers are underpaid and overworked, they slack on the job because there is no real satisfaction of accomplishment. I believe in order to improve job satisfaction for both leaders and Soldier’s, a clear understanding of everyone’s goals and expectations need to be set. As a leader, understanding your team’s underlying desires and their motivating forces will be essential for continued success. (Newmethods.org, 2017) The goal setting theory of motivation reinforces the fact that a Soldier’s motivation shares a direct relationship with their goals. According to Edward Locke, setting specific and challenging goals for your team motivation will provoke extreme productivity.
