The title “Lime Light Blues” evokes both restless and sadness through the imagery that he lives under spotlights. The first part of the poem focuses on narrator’s experiences of people’s implicit prejudice on blacks. The second part of the poem starts with “when I dance…” mainly focuses on the narrator’s anxieties and ironies toward other’s intense attentions. Young’s descriptions of him being uninhibited and rebellious serve as a foil to the white people’s intolerance of him. Kevin Young’s writing is not in a specific form. But he is holding the poem together through a repetition of certain sounds: “shoes,” “doors,” “walls,” “glass,” “class,” and etcetera to emphasize his undiluted cynicism as he acts like a maverick. People on the street do not know him except those caricatured black racial stereotype. People “snap” their books, “clutch” their bags, sees him as a carjacker, mugger, shoplifter, and drug dealer, revealing a common sense that a black man’s life is marked by prejudice and ostracism. By using metaphors, the words “score,” and “green” indicate an incorrect stereotype of black men’s relation with drugs and money. From Young’s standpoint, black men experience some degree of prejudice of being black skin men. Because as he points out, “Plainclothes/ cops follow me in stores/ asking me to holler/ if I need any help.” Plainclothes cops even pretend to be Clerks in the store, and they are so certain that he is black, looks unsettling that they even ask him to “holler” if he wants steal something, and they are ready catch him any minute. Additionally, Young writes about “Crowds gather/& wonder how/the spotlight sounds.” Here, “spotlight sounds” actually refers to the response from the narrator or black men to other’s attentions or treatments. He points out that “When I dance”, I burse people to fight. Because black men are under the spotlight and things related to them attracts peoples’ attentions. Then he writes, “as I cross/ the street unlooking.” This shows the change in his attitude that he careless about causing another disruption. Living in an environment where the crime rate is relatively low Dreamers do not worry about the daily protection of their bodies leaving room for their minds to be open to explore all life has to offer. Rankine inserts an image of Hennessy Youngman, who is a youtube personality discussing how to be a successful black man. Youngman sarcastically gives a tutorial where he argues that you have to succumb to the black stereotype in order to succeed stating, “be angry, have this angry n*gga exterior,” and be, “approachable,” and, “white people want to consume the exotic other [...] they don’t really want to understand you, because if they understood you, you’d be just like them, and white people don’t want the n*gga artist to be just like them [...] keep them entertained [...] keep them white f*ckers away from the man behind the curtain [...] that you have a savings account or have a savings account or that you recycle [...],” (Hennesy Youngman, Art Thoughtz). The transcendent quality of the blues, featured in the poem by Langston Hughes, may be placed in opposition to McKay as there is undeniable value in shared experience. While the nature of blues music within the poem is undeniably black and meant to connect black people, the poem presents music as something that is important for expression and formulation of identity as a dynamic community. The two poems, in their depiction of the performances, propose different solutions to the black condition of isolation. While McKay suggests that the strength to counter oppression and alienation is present in the hidden capacity of the individual, Hughes presents a man who is kept alive through struggle and persistence fueled through a communal tradition.
In the writing “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples, located on www.learning.hccs.edu and published in 1986, the writing tells of a black man at the age of twenty-two who is viewed as a convict due to the prejudice wave consuming the United States. The publication opens with the young man walking the streets of Chicago during the dusk hours. A panicked woman walking ahead of him ran away. He was a black man with a beard, standing about six-two. His appearance made people nervous. He was seen as a rapist, mugger, criminal, and much worse due to how he was seen. Mid 20th century Harlem, it can be a depressing place for African Americans and their communities. In "Sonny's Blues" we learn about how the Narrator and his brother Sonny go through a tough time together in Harlem and how the blues gets them through the pain that occurred in Harlem at this time. Throughout the story there are four reoccurring themes, Suffering, Imprisonment, Redemption, and the blues. The themes play an interesting role into shaping the characters and reveal the authors intentions of the story.
The poem “Southern Road” by Sterling Brown is about a man in prison contemplating his life. On either side of the jail fences, his life is depressing, and the blues tone sets the mood. Two prominent characteristics of the poem is the low language dialect and onomatopoeia. Brown uses these literary devices to paint a picture. He does not mention that the protagonist is black or that he is from the south, but from his dialect, the readers are able to tell his ethnicity. The literary devices used in the poem reveals the story of the protagonist and captivates the hardships of African American.
This group of men were poor men, unemployed, uneducated. These men lived through failure after failure and therefore, they look to the street corner as “a sanctuary for those who can no longer endure the experience or prospect of failure” (Liebow p.139). Their names were Tally, another Sea Cat, and Leroy. He observed the friendship between these corner men, and their involvement amongst other activities. Liewbow accompanied them to bars and parties, he appeared in court with them, and visited them in jail. Tally’s Corner provided a look at the connection and relationship of streetcorner men to their whole lives. Their jobs, family, affairs, friends and networks throughout the low income ghetto neighborhood surrounding Tally’s Corner, Washington D.C.
When discussing the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, due to the strength of their relationship, one must look at Blues and Jazz. Many viewed this genre as a voice for the black communities and as “the New Negro poets expressed a deep pride in being Black” (Smith, 1983, p. 37) it is easy to see how this influenced their poetry. The main theme of Blues were the troubles of life and finding an escape, and this underlying dissatisfaction was incorporated into poetry as a response to many of the injustices present. For example, a clear example of this is Langston Hughes’ Homesick Blues which uses many of the key techniques from Blues songs, such as short lines to create urgency. The poem discusses the effect of prejudices and injustices on the black communities, especially when it comes to finding a home and an identity. There is a subtle, irregular rhyme scheme from words such as “sun… done” (Ramazani, 1994, pp. 152-3) which strengthens the influence. The dull, full rhymes create a sense of dissatisfaction and boredom, as if the speaker has given up on life. Hughes similarly uses many colloquialism and phonetics, which were common in Blues songs, such as “De Railroad Bridge/ a sad song in de air” (Ramazani, 1994, pp. 152-3), which furthers racial pride and identity, present in Blues and Harlem Renaissance poetry. In “Just Walk On By: A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space,” by Brent Staples has a different perspective of the people who is discriminated against by their appearance. This short story gives the audience an overview of a young African American male who is categorized as a criminal. Although, Staples was discriminated against he sees the perspectives of White Americans’, and tries to go out of his way to ease their concerns. Staples created this short story to give people an outlook of his life with the color of his skin. Staples accomplishes this through figures of speech such as Point of View, Hyperbole, and Idioms.

James Baldwin was an African-American writer who grew up in Harlem and was considered one of the 20th century’s greatest writers. He achieved this status through his use of racial and social issues within many of his masterpieces. His experience with discrimination, poverty, and drugs lead him to write many short stories about the struggles African-Americans faced in America. His style is considered one of the most distinctive styles in American literature. “Sonny’s Blues” was one of James Baldwin’s earlier masterpieces and is set in Harlem, New York just like many of his other literary works of art. The short story is about two estranged African-American brothers and how “that relationship has moved through phases of separation and return”
In both “Sonny’s Blues” and “The Weary Blues”, music serves as a form of catharsis; in “SB” Sonny is able to escape his troubled life, and in “WB” the Negro man expresses his sadness about his difficult life. The portrayal of music differs in that it’s more of a joyful presence in “SB” but a grim and depressing one in “WB”.
In the short essay, “Black Men in Public Space” written by Brent Staples, discusses his own experiences on how he is stereotyped because he is an African American and looks intimidated in “public places” (Staples 225). Staples, an intelligent man that is a graduate student at University of Chicago. Due to his skin complexity, he is not treated fairly and always being discriminated against. On one of his usual nightly walks he encountered a white woman. She took a couple glances at him and soon began to walk faster and avoided him that night. He decided to change his appearance so others would not be frightened by his skin color. He changed the way he looked and walked. Staples dressed sophisticated to look more professional so no one would expect him to be a mugger. Whistling classical music was referred to the “cowbell that hikers wear when they know they are in bear country”(Staples 226). The cowbell is used to protect hikers from bears. But in Staples case, it was to not be stereotyped and show that he is harmless. The general purpose of Staples essay was to inform the readers that stereotypes could affect African Americans and any other races.
The inclination to violence stems from several circumstances of life among the poor; the stigma of race, drug use and drug trafficking, and lack of employment, as well as the media and, family/peer association. The Code of the Streets by Elijah Anderson, is a groundbreaking essay the social scientist wrote, taking us inside of a world that most of us only read about. Anderson shows us how a frantic search for acceptance and respect governs social relations among the African American race; primarily the young men.
