Ketamine Hydrochloride is an anethetic developed in 1962 by Dr Calvin Stevens. In the 1960's and 1970's, it was used on the battlefields of the Vietnam War. It had a strong painkilling effect, that did not affect the patients breathing. It's currently used as a human anesthetic and in veterinary medicine, most commonly used on horses. In its illegal form, ketmine is used to get high or even used for drink spiking.
When illegally sold, Ketamine is usually a white powder, but can be made into a pill form or may also be in its original liquid form. The drug is odorless and tasteless, making it easier to spike drinks, which is why it is known as a "club drug." Ketamine goes by many different names, such as, Special K, K, Ket, kitkat, Super K, and many more. It' s a Class C drug, on the same level as marajuana, meaning that it is illegal to carry the drug and to take the drug. If you're caught with it, you risk getting a fine, or even prison time.
The effects of Ketamine vary depending on a persons height, weight, health, and the amount taken. When injected, the effects can occur within 30 seconds, up to 20 minutes when swallowed, and 5 to 10 minutes if snorted. With a low dose, a person can have feelings of being detached from their body, can have hallucinations and distorted perception, confusion, and have a hard time concentrating. They may also start to feel panicked and paranoid. Slurred speech, blurred vision, and lack of coordination, or the inability tio move may occur as well. With a higher dose, the effects of a lower does may be intensified while experiencing other effects such as drowsiness, temporary paralysis, depression, and amnesia. If there is no underlying reason, meaning that the personmay have only tried it because of peer pressure, then the person will learn how to say no, and how to stay away from people who could lead them down the wrong path. In group therapy, the person is surrounded by people who have gone through similar circumstances.
The last form of treatment is outpatient treatment. Most of the persons day will be spent in a treatment facility where they are taken care of and trained by a medical staff, kind of like inpatient treatment. The biggest difference between the two though, is that in outpatient treatment, the individual gets to go home at night.
