Kelly McGonigal, A health psychologist admits to being wrong about stress in her speech entitled, “How to Make Stress Your Friend”. It was once widely believed that stress causes health problems. However, due to in depth studies on stress, and new way of thinking towards a chemical in our body, new research has proved that knowing and understanding stress is the first step in reforming our body’s responses from tense to relaxed. Therefore, in the long run, turning stress into a much healthier alternative through positive thinking. McGonigal uses cause and effect, syntax, and appeals to change the way we think about stress. She concludes, “People who experienced a lot of stress but did not view stress as harmful were no more likely to die. In fact, they had the lowest risk of dying of anyone in the study” (McGonigal, P7). She believes that people will no longer die sooner due to health issues or cardiac problems, if they believe that stress isn't harmful. To rethink that stress is positive. The positive effect will be that you will no longer have the awful feeling that you are overwhelmed, you will feel better and also live healthier. Mcgonigal helps the audience understand her point that stress can be your friend. Due to stress being taken as a bad thing, “People who experienced a lot of stress in the previous year had a 43% increased risk of dying. But that was only true for people who also believed that stress is harmful for your health” (McGonigal, P6). Stress can become your friend as long as you begin to think that stress is good for you. Without positive thoughts and support systems you can end up being in a bad spot with the 43% increase of death. From the beginning of her speech, she makes things feel very relaxed, and relates to her audience, “Who has experienced a lot of stress? Yeah. Me too” (McGonigal, P1). Then proceeds to confess her mistakes, “I fear that something have been teaching for the last 10 years is doing more harm than good, and it has to do with stress. For years I’ve been I’ve been telling people stress makes you sick” (McGonigal, P2). By doing this, it builds up her credibility as a reputable source. This also builds her credibility and makes us feel like this is someone we can trust. She admits to being wrong, she admits to her mistakes, and she is a professional in her field. With all of the things she recognizes and discusses, it all logically adds up to the conclusion that this is something the audience should pay attention to. The entirety of paragraph 25, is a prime example of her use of arrangement to further the part of her claim relating to social skills and stress. She structures the paragraph like so, “Oxytocin is a Neuro-hormone. It fine tunes your brain’s social instincts. It primes you to do things that strengthen close relationships. Oxytocin makes you crave physical contact with your friends and family… But here’s what most people don’t understand about oxytocin. It's a stress hormone” (McGonigal, 25).
