Kelly McGonigal, A health psychologist admits to being wrong about stress in her speech entitled, “How to Make Stress Your Friend”. It was once widely believed that stress causes health problems. However, due to in depth studies on stress, and new way of thinking towards a chemical in our body, new research has proved that knowing and understanding stress is the first step in reforming our body’s responses from tense to relaxed. Therefore, in the long run, turning stress into a much healthier alternative through positive thinking. McGonigal uses cause and effect, syntax, and appeals to change the way we think about stress. Being mindful and having positive thoughts, living in the moment and reaching out to support systems can influence our …show more content…
She concludes, “People who experienced a lot of stress but did not view stress as harmful were no more likely to die. In fact, they had the lowest risk of dying of anyone in the study” (McGonigal, P7). She believes that people will no longer die sooner due to health issues or cardiac problems, if they believe that stress isn't harmful. To rethink that stress is positive. The positive effect will be that you will no longer have the awful feeling that you are overwhelmed, you will feel better and also live healthier. Mcgonigal helps the audience understand her point that stress can be your friend. Due to stress being taken as a bad thing, “People who experienced a lot of stress in the previous year had a 43% increased risk of dying. This is super understandable as being in the audience because it's helped realize that stressing over stress just adds more …show more content…
From the beginning of her speech, she makes things feel very relaxed, and relates to her audience, “Who has experienced a lot of stress? Yeah. Me too” (McGonigal, P1). Then proceeds to confess her mistakes, “I fear that something have been teaching for the last 10 years is doing more harm than good, and it has to do with stress. For years I’ve been I’ve been telling people stress makes you sick” (McGonigal, P2). By doing this, it builds up her credibility as a reputable source. This also builds her credibility and makes us feel like this is someone we can trust. She admits to being wrong, she admits to her mistakes, and she is a professional in her field. With all of the things she recognizes and discusses, it all logically adds up to the conclusion that this is something the audience should pay attention to. The entirety of paragraph 25, is a prime example of her use of arrangement to further the part of her claim relating to social skills and stress. She structures the paragraph like so, “Oxytocin is a Neuro-hormone. It fine tunes your brain’s social instincts. It primes you to do things that strengthen close relationships. Oxytocin makes you crave physical contact with your friends and family… But here’s what most people don’t understand about oxytocin. It's a stress hormone” (McGonigal, 25). The way she structures and layers her piece from talking about the studies and

In the Unnatural Causes film, UC Berkley Professor and Epidemiologist, Leonard Syme, states that an important component of overall health is the “ability to influence the events that impinge on your life,” or another words, the means by which you are able to effectively manage the stressors in your life will greatly impact your health (2015). It is common knowledge that stress can negatively impact your health and the film points out that chronic stress affects the body by increasing cortisol levels, heart rate, blood pressure, circulating glucose levels and decreases the immune system’s response. All of this increases the risks of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses (Smith, director, 2015). If we have power, control and

This article as like the ones before has showed me that too much stress can cause chronic health problems and can sometimes even be deadly. I believe that stress has to do a lot with the people around you and also how you deal with events happening in you life at the time. I also believe that everyone should learn how to control their own stress and learn their own unique ways to help them save their lives, so they don?t hurt themselves. Also with these ladies?s I found out that sometimes you don?t think that your health problem would be related to stress until it is too late to help yourself. To tell the truth I was starting to get stressed about this paper, but then after I read these articles and I realized that I too should learn to relax and take one day at a time.

...le to a disorder under some circumstances (pg 471). Stress can also cause immunosupression, which inhibits the immune system, making it more likely that the individual will become ill (pg 472). In comparison to Dr. Siegel’s video, the key to happiness may be mindfulness and taking life in during the moment. Many people think too much about the past or future and miss the present moment.

Stress is defined as “any circumstance that threatens or is perceived to threaten one’s well-being and thereby tax one’s coping abilities” (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 72). Stress is a natural event that exists literally in all areas of one’s life. It can be embedded in the environment, culture, or perception of an event or idea. Stress is a constant burden, and can be detrimental to one’s physical and mental health. However, stress can also provide beneficial effects; it can satisfy one’s need for stimulation and challenge, promote personal growth, and can provide an individual with the tools to cope with, and be less affected by tomorrow’s stress (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 93).

(Miller, 1993, p.12) " Stress plays havoc with our health, our productivity, our pocketbooks, and our lives, but it is necessary, even desirable." (Oxford, 1998, p.29)
