Without the use of numerous stylistic devices in Kealoha Wong’s work, would you still be interested in his poetry? Kealoha Wong is a slam poet who has performed all around the world. He was even the first poet that performed at a Hawaii governor’s inauguration. In his poems, he uses myriads of stylistic devices and expresses his emotion passionately through his heart. Three stylistic devices that Wong uses to enhance the meaning of his poems are repetition, imagery, and volume.

The first type of volume is using loud volume. This performance technique is demonstrated in the poem “Intentions.” Kealoha Wong increases his volume towards the repetition that states, “break the cycle,” and “this is family.” Through the use of high volume, the poem achieved high intensity and captivated people’s attention. With these effects, the message of the poem, break the cycle of abuse and unwanted behaviors, was delivered with a strong voice that was equivalent to strong support for the victims experiencing abuse. The second type of volume is using low volume. In one of Wong’s poem called “Kealoha and the Ball,” Wong uses low volume towards the end of his poem. The use of low volume decreased the level of intensity and allowed the poem to be subtle. A serious atmosphere created with low volume allowed the message, essence of existence is simply being as our heart tells us to be, to be delivered effectively.
