Kaylee Georgeoff’s Moral Development According to Lawrence Kohlberg

Lawrence Kohlberg developed a system for analyzing a person’s levels and stages of moral development. Moral development questions how individuals reason with themselves when making moral decisions. Kohlberg developed three levels of moral development: preconventional, conventional and postconventional levels. Each level is broken into subcategories including: stage 1: punishment and obedience, stage 2: mutual benefit, stage 3: interpersonal expectations, stage 4: law and order, stage 5: legal principles and stage 6: universal moral principals. There is known to be a positive correlation with an increase in age and increase in moral development in Kohlberg’s studies, because of this I believe I am in the conventional level in stage four: law and order. The preconventional level is the first stage of moral development and is expressed easily in children. During this stage children obey rules to avoid punishment and think rules are “set in stone”. I know I am past the preconventional level of development because I understand that rules can be altered or changed. I also understand that rules are, usually, made to help keep me safe; they are not obeyed to avoid being punished. The postconventional level is the last stage of moral development. Since there is a positive correlation with the increase in development and increase in levels, I don’t think I have reached this stage yet. During this stage, people see rules don’t always have a positive effect on everyone (just majority), people may develop there own judgement methods that don’t agree with the law and people are willing to stand up for their ideas even when society/majorities disagree, because they still believe it is right. After reviewing the subcategories of the preconventional, conventional and postconventional moral development levels, Kohlberg’s theories showed I would be a part of the conventional level. Considering the different criticisms of his work this could change based on different individuals. I think I would be most likely to land in this category again, but if compassion and interpersonal feelings were measured more in Kohlberg’s system, I could have different results. Kohlberg’s theory overall rated me accurately in the conventional level, if those criticisms are not taken into consideration.
