“Peterborough and the surrounding area would have a hunger disaster if not for Kawartha Food Share” –Dan Gemmiti (director)
Kawartha Food Share distributes meals, and emergency care needs to over 7,000 people every month. The food share has continuingly been supportive to the needy for 15 years. While this is the case, the City and Country of Peterborough and its 37 member agencies served 6.5 million dollars worth of food over the years! Kawartha Food Share is 15000 sq. foot warehouse and is rented, so even being a non-profit organization, has to pay rent. This ranges from four city food banks, six housing projects, four meal programs, etc.
Furthermore, Kawartha Food Share can be found at 665 Neil Drive, Peterborough ON. Countless volunteers in every week and you can find the chair of the board, Dave Ralph assisting others 24/7. Dave Ralph noted on how the food share is a non-profit organization where there is only 4 payed staff members. The multitude of volunteers helps keep Peterborough’s hunger problems organized and stable.
This December 2013 Kawartha Food Share has sponsored local volunteers for the program “Keeping Christmas Local” so that families who can’t afford a Christmas dinner can have one as well. In essence, every dollar, this campaign can purchase $6 worth of food.
Not only does Kawartha food share distribute numerous amounts of food, but diapers, baby formulas, etc. for young moms. Also, sweets and treats are included for worthy charity raffles! For instance gift baskets are handed out to the winners of a ticket raffle every year at the Peterborough demolition derby. The volunteers at the derby source that “Kawartha Food Share, gets people attention and really makes the derby so much more exciting...

The mission of the agency is to “provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion, and education”. Volunteers were there to restock the shelves and bag the food for the clients. The staff duties consisted of interviewing clients and making sure the facility ran smoothly. Harvest Hope serves a diverse population residing within Lexington, West Columbia, and Cayce.
Locally, Feeding the Valley Food Bank is preparing for their grass roots movement, Empty Bowl to help feed the hungry. Kids locally are being effected by hunger and lack of funds, so the day is a wonderful opportunity to eat all you can for a great deal. The benefits for Empty Bowl will go towards the food bank and their
They provide food to over 46 million people in need through their network of 200 food banks. They also work diligently on raising awareness by partnering with high-profile celebrities to create effective public service announcements. Though they are doing an amazing job tackling the hunger issue and spreading knowledge regarding hunger in America, there are two areas that may require adjustments.
The Alameda County Community Food Bank has been in existence helping people since 1985 and serves as the central clearinghouse for donated food in Alameda County (Alameda County Food Bank, 2007). The Food Bank provides assistance to the low-income, working poor adults, the elderly, people with disabilities, abuse survivors, people living with AIDS, and the homeless (Alameda County Food Bank, 2007). Assistance is provided through numerous community based organizations and conducts community education on topics of hunger and poverty.
The foundation partners with local community and grassroots organizations to “create innovative solutions to food access and health in their communities.” These solutions include urban farms and cooking classes. Since its 2014 inception, the foundation has developed partnerships in three cities, with future partnerships planned and a commitment to raising $1 million in seed money to programmatic operations over the next three
In our learning through service class, our group project was to help a local food bank at Milford. The group was divided up depending on the amount of assistance that other people at the food bank need. I observed many things at the food bank which corresponds with the film “A Place at the Table”. In the film, I noticed that social programs or charities volunteers are rather lacking, there were not a lot of volunteers. At the food bank, there were quite a handful, but not enough to keep with the influx of work the food bank needs to finish for the day. I know that working at the food bank is quite gloom and happy, the prior knowledge I use to choose the community address that I think should be addressed the most is based on the coverage of
Letters, emails and phone calls soliciting for donations along with providing an awareness of the need to assist the homeless individuals. To co-workers, associates, local providers which provide services to the homeless population, advertising it in my email’s signature page, Face Book, conversations with some community members such as the Columbus House, United Way, Whalley Avenue Special Service District, and local distributors in the City of New Haven and speak to local business; including a request to WTNH Channel 8 Community News to provide a television segment to encourage the community and other organizations that can make a contribution with products or monetary donations to the need of the project. In addition, if there is not enough donations to continue this project in the future, fundraiser of home made lunch meals, will be implemented. Without that source of community and organization supports, there is little likelihood of a successful implementation of the
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
People still struggle to cover payments on their cars, homes, and utilities. The Covenant Food Kitchen in Willimantic, Connecticut served about 23,385 meals last year to a total of about 92 individuals, but nutritional assistance programs will only go so far, and even getting to places that offer assistance is a struggle for some. SNAP can reduce food insecurity in a household by about five to ten percent in six months, but that five to ten percent does not make that much of a difference in the long run.
However, some critics argue that it has little to do with food insecurity; rather, it is the outcomes from food charities expanding their operations. They also contend that people are seizing the opportunity of food made freely available but by contrast, UK food charities purport that they deliver emergency food relief in response to economic hardship and food insecurity as a result of cuts to local authority expenditure and central welfare spending (Lambie-Mumford, 2014).

Paradise Kitchens’ product line includes high-quality, single-serve frozen, easy to fix, and authentic Southwestern/Mexican foods available in the freezer section of certain grocery chains. Their target market is households with approximately one to three people. Often both adults in each household work and have yearly incomes typically averaging above $50,000 each. The households in their target market are generally more experienced, adventurous consumers of Southwestern/Mexican food who seek higher quality products.
We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. In order to broaden our research, we decided to collect food from more than one group of people. We went to an average middle class neighborhood and to a college dormitory. Before we went out into the neighborhood and dorms, we prepared a thank you letter to give to everyone explaining to them who we were, to tell them that we were collecting food for the homeles...

The World Food Program has been extending funds and food donations in enormous amounts to countries that are in dire need of help. They’ve concluded that there are 842 million people who suffer from famine and malnutrition every day. The nations are coming together to solve malnutrition and famine by investing in good nutrition and productivity, which eventually creates economic opportunities for these countries that suffer from famine. The World Food Program has started the process o...
