Karl Marx’s theories about class struggle, communism, and social justice can be known as Marxism. Marxism is summed up in the Encarta Reference Library as “a theory in which class struggle is a central element in the analysis of social change in Western societies.” In contrast the Encarta Reference Library defines capitalism as “an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivation by profit.” Marxism is the system of socialism of which the dominant feature is public ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange. Marx constructed his view on communism based off of the human and technological potentials that were already established in his time, so that the socialist would then become a new society. The new, successful working class would then initiate the plans that help deal with all of the problems that the past society created and the revolution would release a social dynamic. He wanted to get rid of any of the patterns and tends that the capitalist societies had. His theory was characterized by the absence of money, social classes, and political or economic ideology. For example, in China communism is used as a redistribution of wealth where the rich people take all the money and redistribute it to the poor. Together, they collaborated their theories to produce such works as The German Ideology (1846) and The Communist Manifesto (1848), and developed the terms ‘’proletariat’ and ’bourgeois’ to describe the working-class and the wealthy, segmenting the difference between their respective social classes. The term ‘Marxism’ is derived from the name of the philosopher, economist and sociologist, Karl Marx (1818-1883); and refers to the political praxis and social theory based on upon his writings. Marx’s differentiate one class from another rooted on two criteria: possession of the means of production and control of the labor power of others. Marx begins this excerpt of "The Manifesto of the Communist Party" by explaining there has always been struggles and unstable relations between classes throughout history. He explains that the bourgeois (upper class) essentially are always overpowering and throwing their wealth in the faces of the proletariat (working class). In order for the working class to save themselves and reshape the world as it should be, they needed to strip the bourgeoisie’s power away, which could only be done via revolution. According to Marx, this power is political power: “…the organized power of one class for oppressing another” (244).
