Within the University of Kansas Hospital Authority, the Biomedical Engineering Department is lacking a firmer training and comprehendible policy. Is there a better protocol to encompass training through supervision Biomedical Engineering Technicians? The issue is how to more effectively acquire continuous training and properly educate all Biomedical Engineering Technicians, from new hire and maintain training until they wish to leave the hospital. The comprehension policy is need of being rewritten in order to properly judge the individuals skills and knowledge of the equipment.

Among those individuals, is a director, two managers, two administrative assistants, and fourteen biomedical engineering technicians? The director primarily guides the department in the direction he selects for the department to avail, while acquiring input from all staff in order to ensure best practices are achieved. Common tasks that he performs are managing complete operational budget for department, which includes training, staff salaries and parts needed for repairs. Another duty achieved by the director is hiring of all new staff members. Management duties are divided between the two of them. One manager is a responsibility for overseeing repairs within the facility and approving parts necessary for completion. The second manager is responsible preventive maintenance and managing the database needed to accurately reflect all work completed by all technicians. Both managers are responsible for daily tasks such as approving paid time off (PTO), disciplinary actions and other daily task that arise. The two administrative assistants perform a plethora of small errands to ensure smooth operation of daily undertakings, such as ordering parts needed for repairs, opening work orders of broken equipment, and other clerical duties. Biomedical engineering technicians commonly referred to as a biomed or a biomed tech are the men and women whom service and calibrate medical equipment. There are three levels of biomed, each level dictates the level of responsibilities the individual is responsible for and often reflects the years of experience and skill sets. Biomed tech I is the most entry-level technician, the individual is responsible for maintaining and diagnosing simple equipment while under the guidance of their managers and assistance of fellow biomed techs.
