KEEP HOLDING ON:
An analysis of presentiment and how it is manipulated in McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses
Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses is a uniquely penned tale that describes the seemingly yearn-worthy life of a cowboy. Through the use of vast imagery pertaining to the most trivial of matters and the heavy use of polysyndeton to reinforce said symbols, the importance of absolutely every concept and factor can not be ignored. More substantially, through the reoccurring use of foreboding premonition, such as the use of blood and darkness, and how John Grady, the protagonist, defies said premonitions, a deeper understanding can be developed regarding the relationship between overwhelming desire and human nature.
As John Grady is introduced to the reader, his gross misfortunes are also introduced, beginning with the funeral of his grandfather. After the event, to cope with his loss, John Grady sets off from his home, to gather his thoughts and contemplate his path from there forward.

...John, the future may be dull, dim, dangerous, and deadly, but as an unbeholden cowboy, John could not care less.
The heavy repetitive use of trepidatious circumstances and John Grady’s outright resistance and near ignorance to them truly demonstrates how if one believes enough in what they want, nothing can stand in the way. In fact, sometimes the overcoming of obstacles and the immense feeling of success afterwards causes an even greater quality of life in the long run. The rolling of the buffalo in the dust alternatively proves that sometimes, the dangers and nuisances of our day to day lives sometimes just have to be accepted and embraced in order to move on to bigger and better things. In these ways, McCarthy’s heavy symbolism has proven all too telling in just how unrelenting even a singular human soul can be, a concept that will forevermore remain scrutinized.
