In the poem written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning , the author brings to the attention of the reader that children are suffering during her generation because of child labor .She uses quotes ,juxtapositions, simile and she even uses the reference to the Christian religion in way to bring sympathy for the children .

In the very beginning of the poem , Elizabeth chose to use a quotation from Medea. Medea is a character from Greek mythology, her husband Jason cheated on her . Medea was so angry that she decided to kill the woman her husband had an affair with and she also killed her children just so she could make Jason feel the most pain. The quote that Elizabeth decided to use was one that were one of the last words Medea said to her …show more content…

“Alas, the wretched children! they are seeking Death in life, as best to have ! “ This comparison is not only ironic but it brings a dark mood to the poem that makes one see the true despair that the children of Elizabeth’s time are feeling. The whole poem when the author finally comes to a point in the poem that tells the reader what exactly makes the children so miserable and that is child labor . The child labor makes for a very dark poem that not only evokes the use of the juxtaposition that was just quoted , but also for similes that makes the poem a little bit more eerie than others ever written . When Elizabeth wrote ,” The reddest flower would look as pale as snow.” this sentence is full of a sad reality of some children’s view of the world. Children then were losing their sense of wonder and enchantment in the world. They were having to face the world and all of its misfortunes at such a young and tender age . Children of this time didn’t know how to have fun when all of their days were full of back breaking work and long days . Working children saw the way in a different way than how the children of this time see things
