Junk Food

In January 2012, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued new regulations for nutrition standards in public schools [1]. Schools are now required to increase the amount of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain foods, low-fat and non-fat milk; while placing limits on calories, saturated fat, and sodium. I believe the removal of unhealthy food and added focus on nutrition in public schools was a necessary decision. According to a recent report by the National Center for Health Statistics, more than one third of children and adolescents are overweight and obese [2]. Prior to the implementation of these new standards and regulations, public school cafeterias were not following the nutrition based guidelines. Students were consuming an unhealthy amount of "empty calories", and the obesity rates were at an all time high.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “childhood obesity has more than doubled in children, and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years” [2]. Consequently, obesity-related diseases are the leading cause of death in America, killing over 300,000 people each year. The lack of nutritious food that was being provided in public schools was a major contributing factor to the rise in childhood obesity. Instead of a balanced diet consisting of protein, carbohydrates, and fat; students in public schools were consuming meals containing extremely high fat and sugar content. The constant temptation of eating greasy fried foods and artery clogging cheeseburgers every day for lunch is a recipe for disaster. ... Given these points, the removal of junk food and replacement of healthy food is the most logical and beneficial decision. Obesity is an epidemic across our nation that begins with the health of our children. Educating students on the importance of proper nutrition will allow them to make healthy choices and live a healthy lifestyle. With the amount of time children are in school, a foundation of healthy eating can now be created and followed through to their adult years.
