The term “narcissist” formed when a man, named Narcissus, gazed into the river and fell in love and became obsessed with his own reflection. This Ancient Greek and Roman myth may have originated thousands of years ago, but it still applies to the modern world today, especially with the advancement of technology and social media. With humans constantly posting pictures of themselves, it is natural for narcissism to play a role in social medias, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and other platforms. To start off, on Instagram or Facebook, the ability to “like” and comment on other people’s photos has sprouted the inevitable desire for more likes and compliments. Keith Campbell, “Narcissistic individuals seek power for the status and attention that goes with it”. By merely posting videos to be showered with compliments and desiring a higher subscriber count, these Youtubers begin to feel superior as if they were on a higher pedestal than other people. Furthermore, in order to acquire more views, some creators would even post videos with a title stating, “I am quitting Youtube”, wanting their fans to feel sad and beg them to not quit making videos. This situation can also correlate to the famous Shakespeare play titled, “Julius Caesar”, when the main character, Julius Caesar, purposely denies the crown multiple times as a way for the commoners to beg him to take power. When Brutus and Cassius question what the shouting from the crowd was, Casca answers, “Ay, marry was’t, and he put it by thrice, every time gentler than other, and at every putting-by, mine honest neighbors shouted.” (1.2.239-241). Denying the crown just to hear the people cheer for him, the reader can identify the narcissistic behaviour of Caesar.
