Julie Andrews, one of the most recognizable names and beloved person in the performance industry, did not always have a practically perfect childhood or lifestyle. She had to overcome some obstacles and when she did, she used her melodic singing voice, impeccable acting, and witty personality to make one of the largest impacts a star could make on the world. Julia Elizabeth Wells, also known as Julie Andrews, was born on October 1, 1935, to Barbara and Ted Wells. She later took the name Andrews after her mother left her father and married a man named Ted Andrews. Julie did not let these rough patches stope her and used them to make her more determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a performer. At only 12 years old, Andrews made her first musical debut in "Starlight Roof" at the London Hippodrome. She began singing at several places including radio shows, local traditional shows, and even preformed for King George. Andrews once did a screen test for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer American Film Studio but they denied her a contract after deeming her "unphotographable". At age 19, Andrews got the opportunity of a lifetime to move to America after the creators of the musical "The Boyfriend" saw her preforming and asked her to be the lead in their show. Andrew's performance as "Polly" in this musical only caused her career to increase rapidly. One of her most remembered roles was she she played "Eliza Dolittle" in the musical "My Fair Lady". Andrews was the youngest actor to play "Eliza Dolittle" and most people would tell you that no other actor could ever preform that role as well as she did. After one of Andrew's performances, Walt Disney came backstage to discuss Andrews taking on the role of "Mary Poppins" in his new film "Mary Poppins". Andrews had to turn down the opportunity because at the time, she was 3 months pregnant. However, Disney was not going to let her turn down the role
