The left-brain / right-brain theory believes that different people are either more dominant using the left hemisphere or the right hemisphere of the brain. According to this theory, analytical, detailed, and logical are all considered common traits of a left-brained learner. Deliberate, original, and creative, are all how right-brained learners may be described (Rodgers).

Throughout sports history in America, minorities have had a sever disadvantage to succeeding. While the country has come a long way in integrating capable athletes in professional sports, there are several sports that have a white dominance. One rarely sees a minority on the swimming team. Caucasians dominate the golf and hockey leagues as well. One of the most prominent sports that is working on overcoming their racial barrier is gymnastics. Gymnastics is a white dominant sport, not only in America but around Europe as well. Ever since Dianne Durham was first African American to start competing on an elite level in the 1980s, there have only been a handful of black gymnasts recognised on the national level. It took until 1996 for a black gymnast to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Dominique Dawes competed in Atlanta and made history for being the first black person of any nationality to win a gold medal in gymnastics. While gymnastics has made progress including African Americans, they still have prejudices to overcome.
The two hemispheres of the brain are the left and the right hemisphere. Each having it's own unique purpose and function. The two hemispheres are separated by a fold down the middle connected only by a thick nerve cable called the corpus callosum. The Left hemisphere is thought to be the logical side controlling speech, reading, writing, details, facts, maths and science and rational, literal, practical analysis. The right hemisphere is seen as controlling the intuitive, creative side of life, with spatial perception, symbols and images, face recognition, imagination, beliefs and fantasy. Nowadays, it is widely known that the right and left hemisphere have different functions. The two hemispheres are equally important in a daily life basis. Nevertheless, in the 1960’s this was not common knowledge. Even though today the importance of the brain hemispheres is common knowledge, people don’t usually know to whom attribute this findings. One of the people who contributed to form a more defined picture about the brain hemispheres and their respective functions was Roger Wolcott Sperry, with the split brain research. Roger Sperry did more contributions than the split brain research, but this is his most important and revolutionary research in the psychological field. Thanks to the split brain research, Sperry proved that the two hemispheres of the brain are important, they work together and whatever side of the brain is more capable of doing the task is the hemisphere that takes the lead.
The left side of the brain is known to learn verbally. It uses details and fine-grain analyses (Robbins, 1985) primarily to learn. Researchers found that the left hemisphere of the brain understands better with speaking, writing words, using symbols, organizing sequentially, using logic from facts to come to conclusions, and relying heavily on numbers to measure or count (Schiferl, 2008). Some other qualities the left side of the brain is more popularly associated with are language, critical thinking and reasoning (Cherry, n.d.). It is believed that the left brain is the dominant hemisphere, because it learns verbally and it picks up basic instructions a lot easier. For example, I being left brain dominant, in High School I exceled in subjects such as math and debate. Being left brain dominate helped in math, because we rely heavily on numbers and using logic from facts to come to conclusions. Debate was easy, because of the left brains ability to strategically organize events in a sequential time line. My creativity side was hindered by not being right brain dominant.
The brain’s hemispheres are specialised in their functions, amongst others, the left hemisphere is dominant in language, mathematical reasoning and logical thinking. The right hemisphere is dominant in facial recognition, expression and spatial thinking. These findings that the different hemispheres are specialised in their function have come from experiments performed on those with damage to specific parts of the brain thus being able to isolate the particular damaged area and experiment upon this.
