Joseph Stalin was a harsh Soviet leader in Russia. He became a strong influential leader quickly and abused his power to harm others. He killed millions of people, he imprisoned many more. It did not matter who they were or what they believed. He had purges (the removal of people who are considered undesirable), and this was the way he disposed of those he thought to be not worthy. Joseph Stalin had affected many people within the time of his terrible reign. He killed, imprisoned, and left many for dead. Over twenty million people died because of Stalin’s purges. Stalin murdered tens of millions of his own people out of fear and paranoia. He killed to maintain his power. The majority of the deaths were caused by neglect. Five million people had died in the Soviet gulags (labor camps), almost two million people died while being deported, and one million Germans perished while under Soviet watch. Between six and eight million people died due to famine. Famines were caused by Stalinist policies. Forced collectivization showed a disregard for an individual’s life. One million imprisoned or exiled. About nine million peasants were forced off their land, and two million peasants were arrested during the mass collectivization program. One million were exiled from Moscow and Leningrad. One million were executed during the ''Great Terror''. Several people were killed in a rush to get past the bier. In spite of his brutal actions and his harsh control of the economy, he was still widely popular. For most Soviet citizens it had been a great loss. Stalin's death created a mixed feeling of grief, relief, and anxiety. Dignitaries from the Communist world gathered in Moscow to pay final respects to the man who had been their superior leader, the one who changed fascism. Stalin was a terrible man who abused power to destroy many lives, and kill many people. He was such a powerful speaker and influential man that he was unstoppable. He had no concern for anyone but himself. He influenced many lives, both positively and negatively. People will never forget Joseph Stalin and his cruel ways.
