Joseph Lancaster was most noted for developing the monitorial education system, in which more children could be educated in one setting by having advance learners teach other children under guidance of an adult.
Lancaster was born into a low economic Quaker family in London during the year 1778. Due to religious discrimination and lack of finical backing, Joseph was educated at home by his father. During the 18th century, a child’s education was not a priority, often children were treated as machines and not valued. Education was not an option for the many lower class citizens and many people were illiterate and under educated. At an early age, Joseph Lancaster realize the importance of education and the value of being able to read and write.
Nathan Hale was born on June sixth, 1755, in Coventry, Connecticut. Richard Hale and Elizabeth Hale were his parents. Nathan had nine siblings. Enoch Hale was the most acknowledged sibling of Nathan Hale. Education was important to both of them. In addition to learning, Nathan was interested in wrestling, football, broad jumping, and women. Resources state that he was “the idol of all his acquaintances”, which was the reason for everyone’s admiration for him. This was one important part of Hale’s remembrance.
Johns Hopkins was born in 1795, then when Johns was 17, his mother sent him to work for his Uncle in Baltimore, speaking to her son just before he left, his mom said to him "Thee has business ability." After working for his uncle, Johns went into business for three years with his friend and his 3 brothers, calling the business The Hopkins Brothers. The business shipped whiskey into Baltimore in exchange for staple supplies that were shipped back to Western whiskey makers, they sold this whiskey under the name Hopkins Best.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on April 29, 1951. Dale was raised by Ralph and Martha Earnhardt. He grew up around dirt track racing. Dale always went with his dad, Ralph Earnhardt, to the small dirt tracks. Ralph Earnhardt never was as famous as his son Dale, but was known for his very clean driving style. Dale Earnhardt quit school in ninth grade to race and to work as a mechanic. Dale started dirt track racing at the age of 15. Early in Dale’s career he was nicknamed Ironhead and the Intimidator for his unique driving style, which was very aggressive and had a never say quit driving attitude.
Andrew Foster was a teacher, missionary, and pioneer, He dedicated his life to helping Deaf people learn ASL, and working to assure that Deaf people in Africa had access to education. He was passionate about helping the less fortunate, and felt compelled to go to Africa to do mission work. He stated in some of his writings that he was, “moved by this vast educational and spiritual void among my people.”
Hiram Revels was born on September 27, 1827 in Fayetteville, NC. Unlike the majority of African Americans in the south, Hiram was born to free parents. His father worked as a Baptist preacher and his mother was of Scottish descent. Because of his Scottage background he was believed to be mixed with African and Croatan Indian lineage. In a time when teaching African Americans was illegal, Revels had an opportunity to attend a school taught by a black women. His older brother Elias Revels owned a barbershop, which he inherited upon his sibling’s death. Two years later he left to continue his education and to obtain a job.
Lawrence Willoughby, an African American male, was born in 1881 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He was the son of Lannie Anderson and X Willoughby. Lawrence married at 22,a woman by the name of Jennie Best on December 20, 1903. Records says that the two married in Pitt County, North Carolina. They had eight children in 13 years. He died on August 4, 1951, in Greenville, North Carolina, at the age of 70.

Most of Francis’s memories revolved around his family, the Clark family, and the Reed family. All three families have been family friends for as long as they’ve been in the town of Lynchburg. Drake decided that he should work with the queen on taking land and sea control from Spain to fulfil his goal Perry 293). In 1572, Drake took 30 tons of silver from Nombre de Dios, and in 1577 he attacked the Spanish in Chile and Perry while, circumnavigating the earth (Perry 293). During this trip, he collected spices in the Philippines and claimed land for the queen which he called New Albion, San Francisco (“Francis Drake”).
