1) Plagiarism isn’t illegal in and of itself, but it can lead to legal actions. In this paragraph I will explain a few different consequences that you could encounter with plagiarism. The first of which specifically pertains to students. Students who plagiarize can get into more trouble than just getting a 0 (F) on their paper. The consequence varies from institution to institution but most “ethical” and “accredited” institutions will expel you from your class or institution and will also report it on your transcript which will greatly hinder your ability to enroll in another institution. Bailey used a great example in his article that using Google to plagiarize and thinking we wouldn’t get caught is like a bank robber using the security system to scope out the site before a big heist and not thinking that the same security system he used to scope out the place would be used to catch him. Google is the world’s most powerful search engine and anything can be found using Google even the website that you stole from. Another way instructors can detect plagiarism is through the countless number of plagiarism detection software that is available today. Actually, most academic institutions pay to get one of the programs to be used by their instructors. The third way an instructor can detect plagiarism is with their own eyes. Most instructors look for things such as: sudden changes in word choice and diction, different fonts within the paper, and topics discussed in the paper that don’t pertain to the assignment. This throws up a huge red flag with your paper and the instructor will most likely investigate the matter
