In an interview with the American Academy of Achievement, Jonas Salk stated “Risks, I like to say, always pay off. You learn what to do, or what not to do.” As a man of science, Salk truly believes and lives these words every day. In his career he has surely taken many risks, chasing down new theories and ideas, only to lead to a dead end road. But one day, he stumbled upon an idea, and took a risk that left an impact on humanity forever. Not only has Jonas Salk left his stamp on the medical world with the development of the Polio vaccine, but his team continues to conduct groundbreaking research on some of today’s most deadly diseases.
Knowledge of Polio has seemingly decreased throughout the years, but there is no denying its terrifying impact on parents of the early 20th century. What many people are unaware of is the fact that Polio is caused by a virus that can be spread by simple person-to-person contact (History of Polio). Secretions from the nasal and oral cavities as well as contact with bodily waste (feces) lead to the spread of this virus. Upon contact with a “contaminated” person, the virus travels through the mouth, growing and reproducing new cells as it moves along the digestive tract (History of Polio). In the most severe cases of Polio, the virus exits the digestive organs and enters the bloodstream where it wages war with nerve cells. This results in throat and chest paralysis and possibly even death (History of Polio).

That ambition drove him to develop one of the greatest medical feats of all time and a build an unprecedented research facility. He had to take many risks and face many people who did not believe in him, but in the end, Jonas Salk accomplished more than anyone thought was possible. Long after his passing, Salk’s legacy of hard work, brilliant ideas, and simple compassion for the human race will live on. He has left his mark on history with his work and he has also placed himself into the future with the research that is being conducted every day in his name. It is only a matter of time before the Salk Institute comes out with another groundbreaking concept proving again what can happen when you mix a little courage, a lot of ambition, and a brilliant mind for science.
At first polio was a troubling prospect when it first reared its ugly head in the United States of America. In a noble effort to be rid of polio, America as a whole was to adopt stringent sanitation measures. Everywhere, especially the home was to be spotless and clean in order to try and prevent the contraction of polio. This coupled with the view that America as a western nation seemed impervious to such a lowly disease tried to assuage American fear of the disease. Despite the measures commonly adopted throughout the myriad of cities and towns, polio still managed to spread around the country and wreak havoc taking thousands of lives. Salk's vaccine was composed of "killed" polio virus, which retained the ability to immunize without running the risk of infecting the patient. A few years later, a vaccine made from live polio virus was developed, which could be administered orally, while Salk's vaccine required injection. Further, there was some evidence that the "killed" vaccine failed to completely immunize the patient. In the U.S., public health authorities elected to distribute the "live" oral vaccine instead of Salk's. Tragically, the preparation of live virus infected some patients with the disease, rather than immunizing them.
The first discovery was made in 1952, in the developing field of virology. Virology is the study of viruses and how they behave. To develop the vaccines for the viruses, researchers infected the HeLa cells with many types of infections, such as measles, mumps, and the infamous poliomyelitis virus, also known as Polio. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whose mission is to save lives and protect people’s health security, Polio is a "crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease caused by a virus that spreads from person to person invading the brain and spinal cord and causing paralysis" (Freeman). Jonas Salk, who was a virologist at the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP), used inactivated viruses (virus particles grown in culture and then killed by a form of heat) to create a polio vaccine. In the United States there was a vicious enemy everyone feared. In the 1950s the United States was under attack by the ruthless Poliomyelitis virus. Americans lived in constant fear of their children contracting this horrible virus that left many children paralyzed. During the outbreaks in the 1950s foundations were created to fund research and create awareness to help find a way to eradicate the virus. Americans become focused on doing anything in their power to fight this virus off. Jonas Salk’s Exploration of Medicine and research led to the creation of the Polio vaccine that united the country, prevented further outbreaks, and introduced a new form of treatment which has limited the fatality of polio infections today.
Polio: An American Story describes a struggle to find a vaccine on polio through several researchers’ lives, and over the course of many years. The second thesis is the struggle between Salk and Sabin, two bitter rivals who had their own vaccine that they believed would cure polio. The author David M. Oshinsky, is describing how difficult it was to find the cure to a horrifying disease, which lasted from the Great Depression until the 1960’s. Oshinsky then writes about how foundations formed as fundraisers, to support polio research. Lastly, the author demonstrates how researchers were forced to back track on multiple occasions, to learn more about polio.
Many people, mainly kids suffered from polio, which is a disease that causes the child to become paralyzed. This disease was feared greatly at the time, until Dr. Jonas Salk created a vaccination for the disease in 1952. Within six years, the vaccine brought the disease under control. Fifty-nine years after the vaccine was introduced to the world, the number of cases of outbreaks has dropped 99% and only three countries still remain in an epidemic state with the virus, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In 1994, the WHO Region of the Americas was certified polio-free and in in 2013 only406 reported cases were existent in the world, compared to the 350 000+ cases in 1988. (Who, 2014).

The smallpox vaccine was invented as early as 1796, and since then the use of vaccines has continued to protect us from countless life threatening diseases such as polio, measles, and pertussis. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2010) assures that vaccines are extensively tested by scientist to make sure they are effective and safe, and must receive the approval of the Food and Drug Administration before being used. “Perhaps the greatest success story in public health is the reduction of infectious diseases due to the use of vaccines” (CDC, 2010). Routine immunization has eliminated smallpox from the globe and led to the near removal of wild polio virus. Vaccines have reduced some preventable infectious diseases to an all-time low, and now few people experience the devastating effects of measles, pertussis, and other illnesses.

The history of vaccinations does not begin with the first vaccination itself but rather an infectious disease that had greatly affected the human population. In 1796 Edward Jenner created a successful composition using cowpox material that created immunity to the ongoing growth of the small pox disease. Jenner’s method underwent 200 years of medical and technological changes until it had finally resulted in complete elimination of the smallpox disease. Vaccinations have been a controversial medical topic for many years and although it is proven to be an effective means of preventing serious effects, including fatalities from childhood illnesses the controversy remains that the side effects from the immunizations outweigh the risk of contracting the disease. According to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia they state that “innovative techniques now drive vaccine research, with recombinant DNA technology and new delivery techniques leading scientist in new directions. Disease targets have expanded, and some vaccine research is beginning to focus on non-infectious conditions, such as addictions and allergies” (“The History of Vaccines” College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Web. 10 January. 2014). While public health officials insist that vaccines are the best way to protect public health. Over the past thirty years the vaccination schedule has tripled and since then there has been an alarming rise in the infant mortality rate in America. The problem is not the vaccination itself, but the quality of the vaccination.
The number one reason why vaccinations should be mandatory for all children in the United States is because immunizations can save a child’s life. According to the World Health Organization, immunization currently prevents two-three million deaths per year (“10 Facts”). Because of the incredible scientific progressions scientists have made concerning vaccines, children in the United States can instantly be protected from countless diseases! Diseases that previously took the lives of thousands of children prior to vaccines, have now been eradicated entirely and others are nearly extinct. The eradication of the disease polio is one of the many great effects that vaccines have had on children in the United States. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states in their article, “Five Important Reasons to Vaccinate Your Child”, that prior to vaccinations, polio caused widespread death and paralysis to many children countrywide, but today, thanks to the positive influences of vaccinations, there have been no reports of polio cases in America
Through the rise of technological advances in medicine, the vaccine has changed the world for the greater good of the human race. Making a great triumph and virtually eliminating an array of life-threatening diseases, from smallpox to diphtheria, thus adding approximately thirty years to many humans’ life spans. Although, a new complication has arisen, possibly linking neurological digression with this rise of new vaccines. Such a digression has forced parents to exempt their children from receiving vaccinations and brought forth mental anguish affecting the minds of many.
