Jonas- Jonas is the main character in the book, he is eleven years of age and is on his way of becoming an adult in his community. He is sensitive, contemplative, careful, mature and intelligent. Before his training, he isn’t thoughtful, he worries a lot for his friends and family, and he likes to grow close relationship with other people. Under the guidance of The Giver, he discovers new awareness of beauty, pain, love and death which he then becomes frustrated and angry with the community’s ignorance and convinces The Giver to help him change it.
The Giver-The Giver is the current Receiver of Memory and trains Jonas to be the next Receiver. Although he lives in luxurious area and does not have a very active life, he suffers the pain from the burden of memories that he holds. Through the course of the book, The Giver is considered as a thoughtful, loving, wise and kind man. But he gets cynical and frustrated when he sees too many people are giving up and choosing sameness.
Jonas’s father- He is a shy, quiet, considerate and caring man. He is a Nurturer, who takes care of every newborn child
As a part of the community’s expectation, the relationship between people revolves around careful behaviour to keep a distance. Whereas, Jonas and The Giver’s relationship is very open. They have a father-son relationship based on love. The Giver’s care for Jonas is the same as the one he has for Rosemary (her released daughter). There’s evidence that they are related since they are the only people that have pale blue eyes. The Giver shares memories of love with Jonas because he wants to teach him to experience strong emotions. Because The Giver cares so much for Jonas, he balances good memories and terrible emotions like fear and hunger, so Jonas doesn’t get frightened too much.
