Crash, crack, boom, are the noises that can be heard when the mysterious the batman appears into action. In both Batman The Golden Age by Bob Kane with Bill Finger and The Caped Crusade Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture by Glen Weldon talk about the interesting characters of Robin and the Joker. Both Robin and the Joker play important roles in the life of Batman. Firstly, the nimble sidekick Robin connects well with batman. For example in the Batman the Golden Age, Batman comments, “And swear that we two will fight together against crime and corruption and never to swerve from the path of righteousness,” and Robin answers, “I swear it” (131, 5). For instance, in Bob Kane’s book he indulges, “A criminal weaving a web of death about him. Leaving stricken behind victims behind wearing a ghastly clown’s grin the sign of death from the joker” (144). Here we have first introduction of the diabolical Joker who gets joy in leaving his trademark grin symbolizing that his victims are dead. This sadistic demeanor is a complete contrast of what Batman and robin stand for making Joker’s game more of killing innocent civilians. In the picture of the comic one can see Joker covering most of the picture holding a stack of cards in one hand. However, in the other hand he has three cards a Batman, Joker, and a Robin card. Notice that he is between Batman and Robin symbolizing that he will always get in between their way of fighting crime. It is the Joker’s game that he loves to play where he will try to get the upper hand. Transitioning into Weldon’s book he describes the Joker’s gimmick, “corny gags, cats, the number two, fear, the mystifying combination of birds and umbrellas” (26). The Joker’s gimmick made him unique among his criminal peers. His laughter and white face paint that would mean innocence, but clearly he is one sly wicked clown. He is a clown that no kid would wish to greet. He is a persona who is intriguing that he keeps coming back in later comics because he is a captivated criminal that makes him enjoyable to
