Inspiring many to stand up and fight for what they believe in is something Kanye West continues to do even today.. Although the birth of rock 'n roll is held to be debatable, primarily based on individual opinion, it is probable that its advent initiated during the 1950s. America experienced a great deal of post-war (WWII) economic prosperity in resemblance with the affluent Roaring Twenties. The British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said during this era that “America at this moment [stood] at the summit of the world” (History.com Staff 1). The counterculture of the late 60’s on up to 1980 is prevalent to the history of media. New social forms arose, including the pop music of the British band the Beatles and the simultaneous rise of hippie culture. As the era continued, a vibrant youth subculture which emphasized creativity, experimentation and new manifestations of nonconformist/mellow lifestyles emerged. This emerging era influenced the media industry heavily. This short time frame in history was a definite media revolution. This era commercialized rock music, along with disco funk among other genres, the game show and variety show era, as well as popularizing mass media through magazines.
Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine are two of the foremost Rock-and-Roll publications of the past twenty years. With its first issue printed in 1967, Rolling Stone instantly became the leading Rock-and-Roll magazine of the United States. Overflowing with gritty news articles and classic rock icons, Rolling Stone attracts highly educated and mature audiences. Introduced little over 20 years ago, Spin is geared towards a younger generation and focuses on their interest in music and current events. Though Rolling Stone and Spin are both Rock-and¬-Roll publications, they implement different ideas of magazine size, articles, and cover art to reach their audience.
Newsweek launched its inaugural issue on February 17, 1933, featuring a speech by Germany’s new chancellor, Adolf Hitler, as well as the election of Franklin Roosevelt. The Washington Post’s parent company acquired the magazine in the 1960’s and Newsweek became a definitive source of news analysis and opinion. It applied a liberal bent to its coverage of politics and war. Those were the days when good content was worth waiting for. Newsweek thrived in the 1960’s, giving coverage to black America and the Civil Rights movement, the counterculture in the arts and on campus, the space program and giving bylines to individual writers and critics. Newsweek was against the war and received awards and circulation gains for that stand (Shufelt, 2007).

When the Rolling Stones first hit the scene in the 1960s, they received more attention for their physical appearance, the long hair, for example, than for their music. However, after releasing several covers and, later, their own original music, the band began receiving attention for blending blues and rock into their own signature sound. They brought a simpler form of blues to the forefront of pop culture, merging it with rock and roll. Even their name shined a spotlight on the blues genre, taking its band name from the Muddy Waters song "Rollin' Stone."
Rock 'n' roll came from a type of music called rhythm and blues (R&B), which consisted of doo-wop and gospel music. It was popular mostly in the south during the 40’s but it soon grew to urban cities. It was Les Paul’s invention of the electric guitar in 1952 that added a new sound and made rhythm and blues into the rock 'n' roll we all know and love today. Most of the artists from R&B were African American, and in their song they would reference sexual matters. So together it gave a bad connotation towards the music and their race, therefore both were never fully accepted in the north. They started the less ‘clean cut’ manner of talented rock bands. Critics say that they started the stereotype of the bad boys in rock bands.
To a college student, or even to a professor, putting a time frame for the Rolling Stones is a task which requires envisioning a world before every memory one has ever made. “Timeless” would be an appropriate adjective, but “the 1950s” serves just as well. The band did not start as its line-up consists of today. Hardly, if any, bands have ever started like that. The Rolling Stones started as a small teen band named, “Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys”, with Mick Jagger singing and Keith Richards playing guitar. The music they played was all covers; they played songs which came from the musicians which they enjoyed. At this time, there were not any new movements arising which were primarily British. In this post-World War II era, the biggest new genres emerging were jazz, country/western, and R&B (rhythm and bass). With these being primarily American genres, many adults in Britain did not want their children listening to this unfamiliar new music. However, the Rolling Stones were always a group attracted to the idea of rebellion. Such influential figures were Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters, and St.-Louis native Chuck Berry.
The Beat Generation Quickly became known by their very aggressive way of writing. Their writing included from what people from the American society thought to be disrespectful and offensive type of writing, where they included Sex, drugs, race, and Rock n Roll in every one of their writings. They did this to simply make a statement. A statement that suggests that they do not care who they offend, they did this to tell their side of the story on how they thought postwar society had turned into, and how they wanted to rebel in regards of how the American culture turned into because of it. They loved that all of their works were involved with drugs, sex, and music because they were fascinated with it all (Sterritt, 2) and once some of their works came out everyone immediately knew who they were. This is what was known as a rebirth of a new world that influenced the twentieth century in a way that no one will ever forget.
The reason why "Paint It Black" created such a growing trend was because it wasn't the usual happy song about holding hands or being in love with a girl. The Rolling Stones wanted to take a bolder step and attack much more difficult ideas. They wanted to project the ideas that were dealt with in the real world for instinct, death, society, and politics, not just simple, easy, love that always ends as a happily ever after. The significance of "Paint It Black" was very important since, it played a major role in sociality because of the slow change to the darker themes which explained the slow change in citizens from hippies to angry, stoned discontented mobs.
The 60’s were a time of drugs, Vietnam, civil rights, and rock and roll, but most of all the sixties were known as the birth of one of the greatest bands to ever exist, the Beatles. In Liverpool, England four boys, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, formed an English rock band. The Beatles started their career by playing in simple clubs for around a three-year period. In 1961 they auditioned for Decca Records. Dick Rowe the man in charge of Decca, turned down the boys and passed up the biggest chance of a lifetime. The Beatles were told that the reason for being turned down was because guitar groups were on their way out. Despite not succeeding in their audition the Beatles worked hard and had a great passion for music. They later signed with EMI subsidiary Parlophone, who showed that Decca records was wrong and that guitar groups were definitely in. Peter Travers, a journalist who wrote for Rolling Stones Magazines, affirms, "During the week of April 4, 1964, the Beatles held the first five slots on the Billboard Singles chart; they went on to sell more than a billion records..." (1). they were a band that was unlike any other. Not only did they sing and write most of their own music, but they also played their own instruments, unlike many of the bands during that time. It wasn't just their music that drew people in, but it was their personality. The boys always seemed to be laughing and joking around with one another. They were a band that has inspired millions and still inspires to this day. The Beatles have affected the world in several major ways.
