John Steinbeck: A Man With Many Views
Of Mice and Men “[....] It took a long time for us to develop the agencies to take care of such economic difficulties. When the dust came up, people were starving; they had no place to go. [....] ”(John Steinbeck). These were the words of the famous author, John Steinbeck, that depicted his introspection. John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. As a child, he viewed many poor migrant workers who were in search of jobs and traveled to other places. Furthermore, he also viewed many people traveling on their own, demonstrating loneliness and isolation. Since employment was scarce, people were migrating to an unknown land and families were being separated which developed mass melancholy. This observation of melancholies led Steinbeck to write a novel with this theme. Steinbeck noticing the dejection and melancholies within the people influenced him to develop his theme of melancholy through his lonely characters Lennie and George. According to Crooks in the novel, “ A guy needs somebody-to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. Curley’s abusiveness in the novel represents the abuse the large farms and ranches inflicted upon thousands of migrant workers during the Great Depression. In the novel, Curley is aggressive and abusive. For example, in the novel Curley ruthlessly says, “By Christ, he’s gotta talk when he’s spoke to. What the hell are you gettin’ into it for?”(Steinbeck 24). The abusive actions of Curley symbolize the abuse migrant workers faced by ranchers and farm owners . Seemingly to the great depression, where farm owners would put out more help wanted posters than necessary. Eventually, this would cause the wage workers to be willing to work for lower wages than what was offered. John Steinbeck took outside observations of migrant workers and formulated it into the writing in Of Mice and Men. The novel, Of Mice and Men, was created based on the observations Steinbeck made and experiences he had. The key experience is the Great Depression. This experience greatly influenced his writing. Steinbeck was able to interact with migrant workers at the time. Being able to interact with other migrant workers impacted the way he viewed the Great Depression.
