John Lennon Rebel, quick minded, daring, courageous, and clever are all characteristics to describe John Lennon. John first started his career in The Beatles, a popular band in the 60’s. Then, he later got introduced to new opportunities as a solo artist and working with his second wife, Yoko Ono. He died at the age of 40 by an assassination. His legacy still lives on to this day. John Lennon affected the world today by being a globally famous music icon, speaking out against world problems, and serving as an inspiration for many people.

In December of 1971, he made an appearance at a benefit concert at the Apollo Theater in New York for the families of victims of the Attica State Prison riots (Borack 188). One year later in 1972, he performed at Madison Square Garden to benefit disabled children and promote peace. For five years, from 1975 to 1979, John traded his regular rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle to take the caretaker role for his son Sean. He remembered how, when he was in the Beatles, he would barely ever see his son Julian. When John would come home, Julian would barely be able to recognize him! He didn’t want that to happen all over again, so he made sure to spend the most time he could with his son Sean (Borack 224). John always believed that other entertainers (celebrities) shouldn’t hide their opinions; they should speak out for the social and political problems they’re concerned with (Dowswell 31). There are a ton of remembrance songs about him such as: “Here Today” by Paul McCartney, “All Those Years Ago” by George Harrison, “Empty Garden/Hey Hey Johnny” by Elton John, “Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)” by Queen, and even more. Another clear example of Lennon’s influence is on Liam Gallagher (singer in Oasis). Liam named his first child “Lennon” in honor of John (Dowswell 48). John impacted a lot of musicians and the way they write and think.
John Lennon left a great legacy. He impacted the music world; he pushed the boundaries of original rock music by including country, classical, indie, gospel, and jazz elements in his songs (Corbin 7). Lennon was known as one of rock’s most powerful social critics because of his idealistic songs like “Imagine” and “Give Peace a Chance” (Borack 160).
