There are 765 Wilderness areas in the United States, one of which being the John-Krebs Wilderness. The John-Krebs Wilderness is one of the smaller Wilderness areas with just below 40,000 acres, and it is located in California. This Wilderness was named after John Hans Krebs, a former congressman of California who was an activist in protecting land. The John-Krebs Wilderness contains a sweeping landscape of mountains, canyons, meadows, lakes, rushing rivers, giant Sequoia trees, and incredible diversity in vegetation. Throughout the low-elevated areas there are drought-resistant chaparral and a blue oak woodlands blanket. The meadow is one of the largest mountain meadows in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. People do not visit this meadow because there are no roads or official trails leading to this area. The meadow is suffering from overgrazing of cattle that took place for a century beginning in 1885 and ending around 1980. Livestock grazing causes many issues. For example, it affects the growth of trees, leads to the transmitting of diseases from the livestock to the wild animals, causes degradation of native plant communities, and a change in habitats for native wildlife species. The NPS would like to restore the Cahoon Meadow without disrupting the Wilderness character. Some people ask, why preserve this meadow if humans rarely see it? The answer is, meadows are ecologically significant because they support much of the wildlife and plant species that are accustomed there. Plant communities are widely diverse within meadows, and they provide essential habitats for a wide range of wildlife, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and invertebrates. As this meadow was being grazed, the wildlife, plant life, and natural beauty has been destroyed. For example, the National Park Service is one of the most important players involved because they are one of the four management branches over the Wilderness areas. Additionally, John Hans Krebs is associated with this meadow because it is named after him; therefore, he takes on the reputation of how his Wilderness is being taken care of. Also, because the Cahoon Meadow is located in the Sequoia National Park, the managers who work there have a say in what happens to the meadow. Consequently, “As part of an effort to understand the origins, impacts, and restoration potential of erosion gullies in wetlands, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks received funding from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to investigate Cahoon Meadow” (Wolf & Cooper, 2016). This donation makes the Sierra Nevada Conservancy a player in restoring the Cahoon Meadow because they are concerned with protecting the land. From the prologue through chapter one in “Wilderness and the American Mind”, the author emphasizes the affect wilderness had on the Europeans during the colonization of America. In today’s society, we are familiar with the concept of wilderness but few of us have experienced the feeling of being encapsulated in the unfamiliar territory. Today we long for wilderness, crave it even. We use it as an outlet to escape the pace of life. However, we have a sense of safety that the Europeans did not. We are not isolated in the unfamiliar, help is usually a phone call away. Though we now view the wilderness as an oasis because we enter at our own terms, in the early colonial and national periods, the wilderness was an unknown environment that was viewed as evil and dangerous.

Katmai National Park and Preserve encompasses 3,674,529.68 acres of land. It would fit in the state of Pennsylvania about eight times. Katmai National Park and Preserve is located on the northern tip of the Alaskan Peninsula and is made up of six active volcanoes and the surrounding forests, lakes, and mountains. The Kermode bear is an interesting bear that’s endangered. It eats a healthy diet of salmon, found from the ocean, and berries ,found from brushes. It can either have a black coat of fur or some bears have white fur. The Kermode bear has many nicknames such as Spirit bear and ghost bear (Shoumatoff). In Wallace Stegner’s “Wilderness Letter,” he is arguing that the countries wilderness and forests need to be saved. For a person to become whole, Stegner argues that the mere idea of the wild and the forests are to thank. The wilderness needs to be saved for the sake of the idea. He insinuates that anyone in America can just think of Old faithful, Mt. Rainier, or any other spectacular landform, even if they have not visited there, and brought to a calm. These thoughts he argues are what makes us as people whole.
I recently watched a video called: “How wolves changed Yellowstone Park”. The video was about how the reintroduction of wolves into the park caused substantial changes in the entire ecosystem. The park’s plant life immediately began to regrow at a rapid pace, animals that were previously scarce began rising in population, the physical land began to change as rivers filled and started meandering less. All of this, caused by one small act.

Sustainable ranching can be helpful in maintaining grassland conditions. Even so, overgrazing is a huge issue that continues to rise as ranching increases to feed the growing population. If I were the land manager in charge of 500,000 acres of public grassland, the first step I would take in assessing the land’s condition would be to take soil samples and examine the amount of erosion that has occurred over the past decade. In addition, I would assess the condition and abundance of plant life in the area. Invasive weeds and shrubs are a sign that the land is being over worked and causing a decrease in native species. Therefore, the amount of invasive species can point to the amount of abuse this land has seen over the past decade. Lastly the
There are 542 refuges in the U.S. comprising 95 million acres of protected land. Individual refuges serve as a multitude of purposes, including protecting endangered plants and animals and their habitats, preserving wilderness areas, providing outdoor recreational and educational opportunities, and providing lands and waters for traditional uses such as hunting and fishing. One would think that from the overall ownership of land and wonderful activities that the refuges provide, animals that are threatened or endangered would be totally protected. However, it takes a lot more than one would think to keep these refuges up and running. The biggest problems that our government is facing are lack of funds and trained personnel. These two problems have led to a diverse number of complications among the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) and the Department of the Interior.
