In the case of three murdered boys, the link to their killer was the fibers compared from the ropes that bound the second victim’s body, to a rope discovered in the residence of the prime suspect, John Joubert. The first child, Richard Stetson, an 11-year-old boy, disappeared on August 22, 1982. The boy was jogging in Portland, Maine near his home. Richard was discovered the morning of the 23rd by a motorist and it was originally thought to have been a hit and run. However, it was found that the unfortunate child had been strangled and stabbed in the chest multiple times. The autopsy also found that there were bite marks on the victim.

When she confronted him, he pushed her and threatened to murder her before he ran to his car and left. Fortunately, the woman memorized the license plate of the vehicle and police traced the car back to being rented by a man named John Joubert. John was a 20-year-old man, who was enlisted in the Air Force and stationed at Offutt Air Force Base. When police investigated John’s residence, they found a rope that linked him to the murder of Danny Eberle. When his vehicle was searched, more rope and his hunting knife were found. The evidence was enough for police to arrest John and while in their custody, he admitted to the murders of the two boys in Nebraska. Because of the charges against him and his warning that he would kill again if he were let go, John was held on a $10 million bond. John Joubert pled guilty to killing both boys and was given the death sentence by three different judges.
Seeing the similarities between the cases, police pulled DNA from Joubert’s hair and impressions of his teeth to compare to the evidence found in the Richard Stetson case. The evidence matched and Joubert was indicted on January 10, 1986 for Richard’s murder.
