The primary reasons for the Reformation were not the theological differences between Catholics and other Protestant groups. Though John Calvin and Martin Luther’s ideas differed from the church vastly, they would not have arose without the corruption in the Church.
Martin Luther and John Calvin’s ideals differed, but they both had a common goal in mind. That goal was to shine light on the flaws of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church had become corrupt and Calvin and Luther wanted to stop it. The ways the Catholic Church became corrupt was it turned into a scam and an engine to gain money for the Pope. The Catholic Church scammed people many times, but the two most notable were the selling of Indulgences and The Holy Door. Perhaps the larger scam was the holy door, this was also a total scam. Pope Alexander said Jesus touched this door that Jesus touched in Jerusalem and he said if you touch it you get cleared of sins, and illness. Pope Alexander made people pay for the chance to touch this door, but in fact this was just like any other door. Corruption in the Catholic Church was the main reason that John Calvin and Martin Luther felt it was necessary to expose the Church and create new religions with different ideas. The Catholic Church told the people that to achieve salvation you needed to get indulgences, complete the seven sacraments, do good works, and believe in god. Salvation is to be relived of your sins and be able to go to heaven. Requiring good works was significant because it brought in a more income to the Church
