Joan River’s was born on June 8, 1933 in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York. From a very young age, Joan was fascinated with acting. Rivers performed in every school play and was involved in theater where she attended Barnard college. After college, she worked as a comedian to get herself out there, but her main goal was to be an actress. In a way, being a comedian was her way of acting the part, much like an actress would do. Along the way, Joan married a producer by the name of Edgar Rosenberg. The couple had a daughter named Melissa Rivers. Joan Rivers stated that the marriage was a good one, for they supported similar goals and worked together on projects. Many of these challenges came from the relationships within her life. The death of Edgar took its toll not only on Joan, but Melissa too. The death of anyone, especially a husband, is hard to accept and hard to grieve through. Melissa and Joan had their differences throughout life, especially when Melissa decided to follow a career in show business. Her mother was supportive, yet did not encourage Melissa’s decision. Joan Rivers was materialistic and cared about her appearance. No matter where she went, she wore a full face of makeup. Also, she frequently engaged in plastic surgeries to keep up with her appearance. In a way, this obsession has been a challenge of Joan’s self image. People’s reactions and opinions would hurt Joan, even though in that business a person should be irrelevant to negative comments. Rivers stated that she did not care about being a comedian, but she was hurt if people claimed she was a bad actress. She views others as not taking her seriously as an actress. Joan Rivers feels excluded at events and as she grows older, she has fewer friends. Her friend and manager, Billy, ended up being fired which became a challenge in River’s personal life. She made an impact in the world through many of her opportunities that she accomplished. First off, Rivers changed the role of women in the comedian and show business world. She made the topics discussed more equal and portrayed women as having just as successful careers as men. Next, her books inspired people to look from within and change the world for the better. The books allowed for the readers to explore through Joan’s struggles in life and to see how she overcame those struggles. Joan Rivers created a jewelry brand that would give women the feeling of inner self confidence. Rivers portrayed older women in a better light. Just because a person is old, doesn’t mean their career is over. In a way, she motivates older women to keep striving for their goals, despite the criticism. Joan was successful in winning Celebrity Apprentice, giving her face time on NBC and allowing her career to pick up again. Throughout life, Joan always looked for the next open door, yet as she aged, and opportunities came and went, she was able to live in the moment and appreciate the opportunity at hand. She never knew when the last opportunity would come, therefore she endured life with inner satisfaction. At times, River’s would show frustration, but she never gave up.
