J.K Rowling: From Rags to Riches
J.K Rowling or Joanne Rowling is the first person to become a millionaire by writing books. Her famous Harry Potter series has sold over 400 million copies worldwide. She has won the 2000 British Book Award, Locus Award, Order of the British Empire award, and many more. No one can deny her success. She has gone from single mother living off welfare to one of the most successful people in the world. J. K Rowling’s success can be attributed to her own innate talent that has been amplified by her hard work, and Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule.
Joanne Rowling or otherwise known as J.K Rowling was born in July 31, 1965. A year later, her sister Dianne was born in their parents’ bedroom. A couple years later, her and her family moved to Winterbourne, England where she began to attend St. Michael’s Primary School. Similar to the American school system, England begins its school year in September and ends in June. According to the Matthew Effect, Rowling would have been at a disadvantage because of her birth date, which is near the cutoff date of school entrance. She was younger than almost everyone in her grade. However, this disadvantage has not hindered her achievement of success. Her accomplishments in life cannot be attributed to the Matthew Effect.
In 1990, nineteen years late at the age of twenty five, the idea of the Harry Potter series popped up in her brain. She worked on her Harry Potter book during the day and worked during the afternoon and evening (Rowling n.p.). In 1993, Rowling moved to Edinburgh along with her daughter Jessica.
