His musical influences, outlined in Andrew Trendall’s article “Rip Jim Morrison: 19 of the Huge Artists That He Inspired”, are seen in several bands including: such as Iggy Pop, Patricia Kennealy, Joy Division, Julian Casablancas, Soundgarden, Eddie Vedder and Ian Astbury; Just to name a few. The crooning vocal style remains a popular method of singing today and may not be if Morrison hadn’t popularized this form of singing. According to Trendall, Morrison’s sporadic and chaotic outbursts of energy have been imitated and replicated a countless number of times. This became an especially popular tools for bands to attracted a crowd for their live performances. Some bands such as The Stooges really became popular due to the antics of their frontman, antics based of the original chaotic trance dances of Jim Morrison. Morrison is also credited for bridging the gap between poetry and music. Compared to most bands of the 60’s The Door’s were considered quite dark, mostly due to Morrison’s melancholy lyrics .The Doors took this darkness so far they were, infact, according to Jim Cherry’s article “Did The Doors Invent Gothic Art?” , the first band to be called Gothic. This new dark genre of music would spark the creation of many other genres including Punk, Grunge, Metal, Alternative and so many others (1). His lyrics are playing a major role in the …show more content…
Bands such as The Ramones and Sex Pistols use this exact attitude throughout their songs and performances, according to Bartelt’s article “No Future”. One of the most commonly cited influences on punk rock is Iggy Pop, who was heavily influenced by Jim Morrison. Causing Morrison to become the grandfather of genres such as: Grunge, alternative, goth, metal, and punk rock. Genres like punk rock kept the dying music industry alive during the 70’s and 80’s, making Morrison’s contributions to the music industry and media today priceless. According to Raf Diallo’s article on Newstalk.com, Morrison set of a chain reaction of influences has lead to the creation of bands such as Nirvana, The Stooges, and The Ramones; All popular figures in their respective genres. Not only is his influence that great, our conception on the stereotypical rocker is based on Morrison’s look. Everything from the leather jeans, dirty shirt, leather jacket and long wild hair all created by Morrison as his signature look. This means that without Morrison many of the bands we listen today might not be around, and even if they were they’d be far different because the far reaching impacts of Morrison’s influence had never occurred. Our very conception about rock culture would be completely different
There are certain musicians that come along that shift a culture, attitude, or future musicians. Another musician that went on influence future generations and considered one of the greatest guitar players in the world is Eddie Van Halen.
Music can be traced back into human history to prehistoric eras. To this day archeologists uncover fragments of ancient instruments as well as tablets with carved lyrics buried alongside prominent leaders and highly influential people. This serves as a testament to the importance and power of music, as well as its influence in society. Over its many years of existence, music’s powerful invocation of feelings has allowed it to evolve and serve many purposes, one being inspiring change. American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel.” This fuel is the very things that powers the influence of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society, that author Glenn C. Altschuler writes about in his book, “All Shook Up – How Rock ‘n’ Roll Changed America.” Between 1945 and 1965 Rock ‘n’ Roll transformed American society and culture by helping to ease racial integration and launch a sexual revolution while most importantly developing an intergenerational identity.
“Undermine their pompous authority, reject their moral standards, make anarchy and disorder your trademarks. Cause as much chaos and disruption as possible but don’t let them take you alive.” Sid Vicious-Lead Singer of the Sex Pistols. (Brainyquotes.com) This quote by Sid Vicious from 1977 summed up the feelings of many of the Originators of Punk Music and the Punk lifestyle.
Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam, Alternative Grunge bands from the 90s, were very influential to today’s bands. Grunge music started in the early 90s, mainly from the Seattle scene. Metallica, Kiss, and even Led Zeppelin helped make alternative music start. Although these bands were very famous in the 90s, many of them suffered from substance abuse and even depression. After years of being famous some bands split completely, some formed new bands with members in other bands, and even some stayed together and play together today. All bands believed that people should be able to afford music and listen to what they enjoy, not what other people want you to listen to. Bands from the 90s have influenced some of
In conclusion I feel authenticity in rock music has a huge part to play and although it is a very snobby culture of "we will like you until we've had enough" its still personal to every person and they have a choice to decide who fits into their perfect music world.
Another reason why classic rock is the best is because you had to be talented to become famous. If you are vocally or musically talented now you have to be physically attractive to make it big. Now if you are pretty and have no musical talent you can throw in a lot of autotune and be “talented”. For example Steven Tyler, he was never really a attractive guy. He couldn’t just wake up one day and be pretty. He made it big for his talent. Same thing with the lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain. If you’re not attractive you might as well kiss your talent goodbye and find something else to do with your
Music tends to follow the trends of its listeners; genres come and go with popularity. Rock and roll was considered to have its golden era in the 1960s (Rock and Roll). It stood out with unforgettable performances by Sly and the Family Stone, The Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Grateful Dead, Santana, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin (Rock and Roll). The Beatles were one of the top rock and roll bands. It is said that their music “combined the distinct sounds of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, and others which shaped a sound that dominated the sixties with its creativity and style” (Holland 105). Jimi Hendrix brought a new style of music called “acid rock”. He changed the way music was played by experimenting with different melodies, different chord...
Among one of Jim Henson’s greatest quotes is, “My hope still is to leave the world a bit better than when I got here.” While the current status of the world is up to debate, there is no doubt that Henson touched the lives of both children and adults through his work with puppets and entertainment as a whole. The Muppets is a show that continues to engage and attract people throughout the world while Sesame Street still puts out quality work that touches on topics most people would not even dare to bring up. To say that Henson did not leave even a little bit of a positive impact on the world would be a tremendous understatement. However; despite Jim Henson being regarded as one of the world’s greatest puppeteers because of his revolutionary

The biggest influential song on Nirvana’s Nevermind album was the first song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It reached number 6 on the Top 40 Charts. This song was groundbreaking for Nirvana and the alternative music scene as a whole. After the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” white, middle-class youth of the United States finally had a style of music to call their own and express their “teenage anthems” (Stuessy, Joe). This was the first song to emerge from alternative rock and to be known in the mainstream of rock and roll, expressing their generation’s expectations, “...here we are now, entertain us”(Stuessy, Joe). “Smells like Teen Spirit” was Curt Cobain’s “attempt to write the ultimate pop song”(Nevermind, Nirvana). He used the soft-loud dynamics of his favorite band, the Pixies. The insidious hooks also showed his admiration for the Beatle’s John Lennon(Nevermind, Nirvana). The style used in this song is simple, plain, loud, and straight-forward. Musically, there is nothing very “innovative” or difficult. However, the reason it is important to rock history is because it brought America’s attention to the once before underground style of grunge. “A driving drum beat, powered by Novelsek’s rhythmic bass, and a memorable guitar riff and solo, mix perfectly with Kurt Cobain’s depressing yet humorous lyrics” (Kastner, Patrick). While it has certainly been overplayed in the past years, it is still an essential part of Rock history.
The science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity. There are several different types of music. People listen to different kind of music depending on their mood. It can help take stress away too. My personal definition of music is describing how you feel and putting it into sound.
Although considered the day Rock ‘n’ Roll was born, many other events in American history have given foundation to this much loved idea. Rock ‘n’ Roll is much more than just music, rather it is the movement which underlines cultural imperialism. Rock had been promoting a culture of comfort and freedom from social constraints as well. Although the style of ‘Rock music’ is easily adaptable into many different sounds, it is still thoroughly identified by its definingly amplified rhythm. The sudden worldwide popularity of rock and roll resulted in an unparalleled social impact. Rock ‘n’ Roll influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and language in a way few other social developments have equaled. The social impact is so large that rock stars are worshipped worldwide. In its early years, many adults condemned the style of music, placing a stigma on its name, and forbid their children from listening and following its ways. Many considered Rock ‘n’ Roll culture as a bad influence to all people, but as the genre aged and the now not-so-young crowds had matured, Rock was respected and
The Doors were known for their style of rebellious, psychedelic rock. Their music is poetry (written by Jim Morrison) set to music. Morrison also had many books published just of his poetry. Although not all of The Doors music was written by Morrison, ninety percent of it was. The band was considered a guru by the youngsters of the sixties, and a scourge by the public. The band seemed to fuse music, drugs, and idealism as a way to reform and even redeem a troubled society (Gilmore 34). They were much like the other bands that were emerging in the sixties, but different in one major way.
Think about the most laid back, independent, self-sufficient, and wild or extreme music movement. What is it? The answer to that is DIY punk. DIY punk began in the mid 70’s and had a huge impact on that time period. These punk bands were ones that did not follow societal norms and did not necessarily care about making a profit from their music. In the article “Do It Yourself… and the Movement Beyond Capitalism,” Ben Holztman et al states that DIY members were collective individuals going against capitalism (45). They did not want to be involved in that sort of atmosphere. Instead, DIY music addressed value and social relationships (Holtzman et al 45). It was very important for these bands to form new friendships with others that had the same
This article demonstatres how important Kurt Cobain was both as a rock and roll icon and a philosopher. His songs which he recorded himself are still popular today, over 20 years after his death. The author argues how Cobain influences other young artists and his effect on the direction of the music industry.
