Lynching was the method of execution during Jim Crow era; it is now similar to death a penalty. The Jim Crow laws were a way to keep black people from ever having any real freedom. Jim Crow came from a song and dance routine of an actor touring the country from the 1820s-1870s. The actor was a white man who painted his face black and humiliated himself when he was pretending to be a black man, while performing for white audiences only (Tishauser, 217). This developed to be the name of the laws used to eliminate the rights recently granted to the black people. With the idea of White Supremacy, many people banded together to form a terrorist society called the Ku Klux Klan.
Blacks in the north were separated from their white counterparts in everyway. Legislators were always creating laws to keep the races divided. Many states tried to impose laws that would segregate schools. The whites did not want black kids going to the same school because if blacks and whites mingled there could be inter marriage. Even the trains were segregated. Negroes had to sit on a certain part of the streetcars and whites on another. Blacks were not allowed to go to certain cities because people thought that they brought down the property value. Imagine people thought just the presence of blacks could bring down property value down.
Today, more African American adults are under correctional control than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began (Alexander 180). Throughout history, there have been multiple racial caste systems in the United States. In her book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, Michelle Alexander defines a “racial caste” as “a racial group locked into an inferior position by law and custom” (12). Alexander argues that both Jim Crow and slavery functioned as racial caste systems, and that our current system of mass incarceration functions as a similar caste system, which she labels “The New Jim Crow”. There is now a silent Jim Crow in our nation. Mass incarceration today serves the same function as did slavery before the Civil War and Jim Crow laws after the Civil War - to uphold a racial caste system.

This separation caused the Jim Crow laws and it’s practices to deprive American citizens of their civil rights based on the significant difference in treatment between the two races and the laws built on separating said two races. Student may name any of the following examples of segregation and there impact: African Americans could not attend most wite schools and colleges, which would have limited there educational opportunitys and also their job opportunities and received low pay. For example, African American doctors were not allowed to work in most hospital and African americans were only considered for menial jobs such as janitor. African American were banned from many hospitals, which would have impacted their health. African Americans were not allowed to live in white neighborhoods. Abraham Lincoln was a man who fought hard to end slavery believing that slavery was evil and was not a necessity. He fought for slaves’ freedom for many years until his assassination in 1865. Slavery, abolished in 1865, after Lincoln’s death, started in 1863 when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was a way of offering hope to the slaves. While slaves were not fully freed until 1865 when the Civil Rights Act was enacted, Lincoln did push for their freedom until the time of his death. The symbol of diversity and the epitome of cultural amalgamation, the United States had been a country in which racial discrimination and segregation were the norms of the day. The African Americans and myriads of people of color had faced terrible hardships in the country’s south during the period of the prevalence of the Jim Crow customs and laws. The Jim Crow era was an era in which the blacks were considered everything but human beings deserving equal treatment within the society and before the law. It was a period when the non-whites were considered sub-humans by the whites and starting from the social institutions to the political arenas the blacks were discriminated on the basis of skin color, race, and ethnicity. I believe our country has not made progress in racial injustice. Yes we have all given equal rights to all races, but our actions say otherwise. There will always be a divide between people of different kind. We are grown up to notice the differences. Personally, I believe we do not verbalize our racial comments, but we still let these thoughts cross our minds. We need to instill in the next generation how there is no difference between two people of different color. We have to show them that everyone is the same despite the color of their skin. This is an area we need to highlight to parents. Most children will hear this message through media, but fail to be taught the lesson at home. Parents influence their children’s thoughts and opinions.
