Kennedy, gave an inaugural address in Washington, D.C., being sworn into the office of the presidency. Leading up to this, Kennedy won the presidential election, narrowly defeating the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. He was the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic ever elected to the presidency of the United States. In his speech, JFK encouraged Americans to contribute to their community and to fight against "tyranny, poverty, disease, and war." He sought to inspire the nation and to send a message to other countries signaling the challenges of the Cold War and his hope for peace in the nuclear age. John F. Kennedy used pathos to persuade American citizens and people across the world to come together and bring peace around the globe. JFK said this: “Tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage.. we are committed today at home and around the world.” (Kennedy, 2) This shows pathos because it expresses a happy future with mentions of surviving and thriving in a time of war and hardships. JFK said that even in the darkest times, he will make sure that we will all overcome it and become better from it. This makes the audience confident in JFK’s presidential role and decisions by promising them the best, even in the darkest of times.
